Been driving my '55 Chebby pick up on a daily basis lately...Its got a Camero front clip with power steering and power disc brakes...Plus, gas is $1.34 here in North Jersey right now.... when the snow is too deep for a fresh 350 and bias ply's, I drive my '95 beater 300,000+ mile Honda...you meet the nicest people on a Honda...

I was driving a '63 Corvair daily for a while till I let the plates go on it. I have been trying to sell it. If it is still here by April I will put plates back on it and start driving it again. Mine has the 4 spd and I figured I was getting around 26 MPG out of it.

I drove a 59 F100 for a couple of years but it had a 66 Ford 390 in it so it really wasn't THAT old. What did get old was that suspension and those brakes. I could plan ahead as a driver but other idiots sometimes made my heart pound when I had to do something really fast. Disc brakes or an ifs would have been nice but the real reason I quit driving it was the 10MPG was costing me $400 per month more than driving a car with 25MPG. It was simple economy.

Hey: Not Hamb friendly but last summer I did some trading with a 56 chevy 4dr parts car and got a 1996 Caprice 9C1 patrol car. Great daily driver with Lt1 350 engine 4L60 trans and 8.5 posi disc brake rear. 160k but still runs strong, 21mpg on the highway and everything works. Also get a kick out of watching speeders jam the brakes when they meet me. I figure I will run it for a few years and swap the drivetrain into an older car to make a reliable driver out of an oldie.

I use our '39 Ford CS, our '51 F-1 and our '53 F-100 Panel Truck as daily drivers, it all depends on which one will start on any day...

'63 beetle rag. converted to 12v and 1600 block. but dual 44s with no choke is a huge pain to get started sometimes in freezing weather. plus, no heater boxes so i have to bundle up for the ride. getting 30 to 35 mpg though if i can keep my pedal away from the floor. went to this from an 86 suburban. its like giving myself a raise!:D

A more interesting question would be how long have you constantly driven that car?
Lotsa guys own old daily drivers but have only driven them for a few years. They acquired them not all that long ago.
I've driven the same truck DAILY for 23 years. I'm sure thats not even CLOSE to any kind of record. but contiuous use is the point.

  14. Until a few years ago I had a 73' /6 Plymouth Scamp. 30mpg, dead simple, and dead reliable. Drive it day in and day out all through college. It composted under me from all the road salt, even with all the oil praying I had done.

I now drive a 2001 4x4 in the winter to keep the old girls from rusting to pieces.

I drive my 34 ford pickup daily, but no snow, it doesnt get any traction, i basically drive it from the last snow fall the the first snow fall, so that detrmins when i start and stop driving it, if its cold i still drive it, no heater though, have thought about putting one in but why bother.

mine will deffinately start, i start it up every couple of weeks, its sitting out in the snow, it was so cold the other day the door was hard to open, the hinges must have gotton some water on em and froze! but it fired right up.

My first vehicle I owned was my 52 Chevy truck.
On the road every day for 14 years now.
The 48 Chevy coupe is almost 2 years on the road now.
I never owned anything else and will drive those until they don't sell us good gasoline any longer.
And then I probably convert to propane.

Drove my 54 Chevy every day for a while as it was my only mode of transportation, and when the 6v system started givin me hell, gettin around got rough. It wasnt until I slid backwards down a icy major road last winter that I said, fuck it, and got a newer beater truck. My 54 means to much to me to have shitty roads and dumb drivers wreck it. In warmer climates, i dont think theres much to worry about having an older driver. But with the possibility of snow, sleat and ice; depending on how much you love your car, its good to have a back up. My roomy used to give me crap cuz he'd drive his 50 chevy 3100 all winter in the snow. But id rather be called a pussy and not put my beloved 54 in unnecessary circumstances, than be cryin when its mangled. I think thats the key. At least here in CO, even during the winter we'll have streaks of nice sunny days. Although its cold, I never had trouble, until the roads got crumby. Now the 54's gettin takin apart, but it was always fun to check the weather and decide whether I drove the 54 or my 91 stRanger.

Probably call it ugly. IMO, it's hard to pull off the tractor grille treatment on any vehicle...really works well for a very few - the rest...ugly.

My every-other-day driver is 29 chivvy custom pickup. It has all the comforts, ac, heater, r&p, front discs, modern motor, hydraulic clutch, with straight pipe and air horns for noise.

The other day I drive the Nash hot rod.

As a Mechanical Engineer, I always state that cars are meant to be driven. (I know- duh!)

Before cars started to get all that electronic and computer crap on them they could last forever, if routinely maintained. My first born drives a 1968 Galaxie Fastback everyday in college and I never worry about her safety. The car is well maintained (by her) and she knows how to drive.:D

<O:pWe give recycling a lot of lip service nowadays but I come from a generation that actually drove old cars until there was nothing left of them. I admire hot rods, street rods and even trailer queens, but unless it is driven on a regular basis it isn’t being used to its fullest potential.;)

seems like most people forget that there was such thing as bad weather when our old cars were made, all of em were driven in cold weather, sunny, rainy, stormy, etc.. if they were capable of being driven in those types of weather back when they were made, and if theyre maintained and reliable, why cant they be driven now? the earth hasnt changed.

my daily driver is a bit new at 1969.
