I just got done spraying a couple coats of latex house paint on my car. Dont worry, I got the good stuff. A solid 15 year exterior house paint. Ha LMAO, I dont think that it will really last. Who has done this already? How did it hold up?

Did you sniff the paint before you decided it was a good idea or is this one of those new trends that I just haven't heard about yet?

When I was a kid, dad bought a 68 Nova with about 15 different colors of house paint on it. I believe it was about 1/4" thick in places. Can't say it looked very good.

If you used a sealer/primer compatible with the paint that was on it to begin with AND compatible with the new finish it should weather as well as a house.
But if you didn't use the primer, it'll blow off the first time you hit it with the garden hose... like the aluminum awnings on my house...

Some poor kid is going to read this and make a post titled "look at my sweet rat rod" inside will be how he stucco'ed the roof of his flat black 86 Caprice for that authentic 50's look.

On a side note, reading latex paint makes me think of those movies where the criminals pull into an alley and peel off the paint so their car is a different color.

  10. I bet you didn't know for under 50 bucks you can buy benjemin moore industral black that would have held up forever. have fun striping that shit off when the sun fades it out and it looks like hell. lol!!!

I used it on my '86 Caprice(Black-white-black for the cop car look). I used Dutchboy Premium Semi-gloss and put it on thin with a roller, 3 coats(ended up being about as thick as a primer-surfacer). It still looked like new when I sold the car 5 years later, hadn't faded or worn one bit(and this car gor driven a whole lot). Once it dried, it proved to be very durable. Because it was (relitivly) soft latex, it was damn near invunerable to chips and nicks. I used a fine roller, so the texture was pretty flat. From 15 feet, it looked like about like primer does. It was a snap to take care of too. No waxing required, just the occasional hosing down. DON'T use a pressure washer on it, a regular hose won't take it off though.

  13. like I said in a previous post, I'd painted a tbucket with latex....The guy asked me what colors they were, and I told him I didn't know, but they were the same colors as in my bathroom. Paint lots of cars this way, use the primer and the paint stays on. Weathers better than the house because it sits in a barn or garage out of the sun...Your standard house doesn't get the same luxury. I'd rather use this stuff than pay some asshole body shop big bucks to give me the same quality job for 100 times the price. Buddy had his car pro done, and a year later you could peel the paint off in strips. Paint is the weak link on a car anyway. Have a 15000 paint job and nobody sees the car, have a 15.00 job and all the trick little doodads you busted your ass to do show up much better.

Latex paint works OK if you are willing to accept some to its limitations. I never could get a gloss like one will with other paint systems but it is pretty durable. It doesn't like aviation fuel though. Here is a pic of my last project http://www.eaa187.org/MemberAircraft/images/Piet01.jpg
That was semi-gloss Kelly Moore using Kilz as a primer. It really did look OK and everyone thought it was great until I told them it was Latex...

If I was going for a cost effective paint job on a car, I would use Acrylic Enamel for farm vehicles. The local Tractor Supply has it for about $25/gallon (and that includes red!). Add a little hardener and it really glosses up nicely.
You won't have a thousand choices of color but the basic specrum is pretty much available. Just don't tell them that it is Farmall red ;)

A lot of short and dirt track people get there paint from Home Depot. If you need to touch up or repaint constantly it is the only affordable way to go.

I think it turned out great. I will put up a pic later. I had to thin it with a wagner latex paint thinner. I went with the OSH stuff, and got it tinted the color I wanted. I didnt even want to paint the car. The only reason it got the squirt, is cause the old pro job was crap; and peeling off by the sheets. So if this peels off, I not far from where I started. It only cost me $30, and yes I do have enough left over to paint the bathroom.

Here's the best I have. I didnt have digital back then, and don't have a scanner now. There's some HAMB approved in the background for good measure.

If your car is that much a piece of shit, why paint it at all ? Save your money til you can build something worth painting correctly..........

I was a little weary at first as to how it would turn out, but it doesn't look bad at all. His cars not a piece of shit, just not perfect. The final texture was a little rough, like a heavy fill prime finish. In my opinion it looks much better than a faded hotratstreet rod dp-90 paint job. I'll post pics as soon as I get home and can shoot some for him.

Back about '78 I painted an early '50's chevy 1/2 ton flatbed with blue latex. I used a brush, it flowed out pretty good, but not perfect. It looked a lot better than before. I had less than $10 in the paint job, and looked three times as good as that.:p It lasted me a year or so, then I sold it and saw it for years around the area. Still wearing the blue latex last time I saw it. It actually looked a lot better than most rattlecan jobs folks try to do. It suited the quality and value of the truck perfectly, and I hauled a lot of motorcycles a lot of miles with it.

I've never tried latex on my car, but I did my house in a Dupont blue pearl fade... Looks awesome! but it cost me $22,567.02 for materials.
