I never build a certain type of car or truck that I have built in the past, even though it would be easier and probably better than the one before, knowing all the short cut's, it would just seem repetitive.

Agreed, I would rather buy a running, driving car and then turn it into what I want than to build from the ground up. Not that I would know how to do that anyway, but I enjoy hunting for stuff and making inprovements, etc......And that does not mean I don't enjoy my cars as much as someone who builds from ground up.

I'd rather build it than drive it. I'm not sure why, but it's always been like that.

I'll finish it up, get it started, get it running good, drive it around a bit, and then just get bored with it.

I guess I'd rather stay busy than sit around steering. lol

That is me all the way. The build brings a certain relaxation, also finding the parts which means hours and hours searching, ect. It is kinda a sickness. ;)

I always have a hotrod that I am building... currently I have a 30 A sedan that I hope to get running this year and I started a 34 pickup for my son.... I have always had a hotrod to drive but to be honest if it is a really nice day I enjoy working on them more than driving them.....

  7. The first two cars I did were kind of a chore to do. I really enjoy the build but I was in a hurry to see the end result. I was working 60 to 70 hours a week and trying to raise a family with my wife, working on the hot rods was a " when I had time " deal. Then I realized when I started my 40 Chevy build that I saw the end result before I even started, in my head, so I slowed down and it became more enjoyable. It took me 8 years to finish that one. I sold it and took a 12 year break from hot rods, during which I started a woodworking business to occupy my free time. Three years ago I realized how I missed building hot rods, so I got back in. I built a fiberglass 29 Ford roadster, alot of fun but I will be selling that to get started on my " dream " build, a steel 32 roadster. I've had that one in my head for 25 years so it should be easy, I've got the flathead and the banjo all set aside, can't wait. I'll enjoy my 29 this summer and then get started. I'm retired as of mid May this year and am looking forward to it. So to make a short story long, I like the cars, but I love the build, I love planning the build, I love talking about the build.

  8. it all about the build! work on it when you have the time......... and enjoy because the feeling of satisfaction from completing each phase is the best

I thought I was the only one ,I spent 7 years building a muscle car and drove it 500 miles since its been on the road ,Runs great and is tuned ,But just sits in the driveway ,While I slave on the model A ,Next year Ill sell the 69 firebird 400 .Its a shame I should of built the 32 truck first ,I didnt know enough then ,My skills was motor building and body work at the time ,Now I can weld and fabricate mostly anything from steel .Im still a novice with a roller and shrinker stretcher ,But I really havent needed those skills .

I don't even have an old car or tools. I just like hanging out here on the HAMB.

The build. Everything from complete wiring, no pre-fabbed harnesses, just one wire at a time, each circuit stands on it's own. I fab all crossmembers and motor mounts, weld them all myself, except in rare cases where it's a steering linkage, then I'll take it to the boiler shop. I shorten my drive shafts. I used to take the radiator to a shop, but the last one I soldered myself. After doing it, I wondered why I would ever pay someone else to do that. Piece-a-cake. :D

I find once they are built most of the fun is over.I still enjoy driving them and I learned a long time ago that I need to have one driver at all times. the rest can be projects.

For some of us it the "vision", the design. Then the build to make it real and seeing it all come together. Drive around the block a couple of times and start another project...

I have to agree I start the build in my mind before I even get the vehicle, then once I purchase the hunt is on! then it's non stop thrash till its something to be proud of then I'm bored ready to start over? Can't explain it any better.

  18. I enjoy the build. BUT, I need time in between them. After a build, I like to buy stuff that's close to my liking and just adjust some of the details, enjoy it for a few months, then repeat for at least a year or 2 before another complete build.

I enjoy the build to a certain extent....I believe it would be better if I had a long term project I was working on as well as a driver....right now all I have is a long term that I'm busting ass on to get done so me and my boy can cruise again...I made a deal with myself that no matter what i would NOT cut any corners nor would I drive it until the last lug nut was in place and it was officially done.

It wears on me sometimes...Right at this moment I want to drive more than build so I keep pressing to reach that finished goal...

Good question, love the build when things or ideas fall into place. Hate the builds when tedious work like cleaning, grinding, cutting has no end but has to be done. It's all relative to all, but seeing and driving the final product makes it all worth it. Not to mention, when you bust parts you have made it simple to fix. Not like this new crap on the road.

I love the build, but even more I love the search for the next one and then finding all the different parts to build it and make it unique. Always looking for the next one while building the present one. Building a 29 Murray Towncar streetrod right now but finding parts for a 64 Thunderbolt clone.

Very interesting. All differant opinions, all car nuts. I can't imagine letting someone else build me a hot rod, but I really enjoy drivein em. If I was just gonna by a hot rod to drive on the street I don't think you can beat my wife's VW convertable.

  24. I've done both, build and buy. On the stuff I've built, I've gotten bored with it when it's done. Kinda like the challenge is gone. Usually takes awhile, and honestly, the stuff I've built is not the rare or high valued object 'd auto, but the buy stuff has been moreso. My '33 is not done yet, so only time will tell if I get bored with it too, but I feel like I'll have it for a long time.
I guess my situation (at least now, I reserve the right to change my mind later :) ) is that the build stuff was for that purpose for me, and the buy stuff was for driving. I never thought about it like that before though.

When I am building I dream of the drive, when I am driving I dream of the next upgrade. I am not in love with the original build but I love the 'tweaking' of the car all day on Saturday then wrapping it up so I can take it for a ride sat. night.

  28. I love the build, it is the way i keep my sanity. I then start driving it, and get bored, eventually starting a new build. I have only kept 1 car, and I have had her for 22 years now.

    I like the engineering and the build ;
Like I start with a lot of dry maple and spruce to build a guitar or a violin, I start with a lot of stainless, and eventually it becomes a car.
After two cars, I thought buying someones creation would give me more time to spend in my atelier rather than in my garage.
It was a fine and goodlooking amateur-built car, - GP Spyder -but there was something wrong with ... almost everything; on a bright day, someone said : what's worth to do once, is worth doing twice, but in this case, it was not; it was a mess ... the line-up of the pedals, brake-servo didn't comply with the slave-pumps, camber/caster and a hundred other things that could easily have been done right initially by some more basic engineering.
I changed to safe-modus, and sold the car.

Original parts are rare here, that's a problem.
    But GRP and stainless aren't.
    So I'm building again.
For that's the only way to get a car which fits me and my needs for more than 95 %.
We like to go places - touring a month in summer - , so a car has to be reliable, has to run smooth and razor sharp.
But, and now I bow humble, there will always be better welders, shapers painters, and better skilled specialists than me.
    Therefore the 95 % :)
But I enjoy the engineering, the build and the drive.
