I need to find a temp sensor to make a stock gauge in a 73 Corvette work.

The stock Sender is 1/2" NPT and rated at 72-88 Ohms Resistance At 220 Deg F according to Napa.

I need the same sender but with 3/8" NPT threads because of the heads on this blueprint motor. (I'm really trying to avoid putting the sender in the intake manifold)

Any idea on a suitable sender?, or combination of sender and inline resistor?

I apologize if this isn't on topic, but I'm really in a bind, the tech guys at Standard, and BWD couldn't help me

I had that problem once on an old truck....I took a Standard TS-6 and put it in my lathe, and made is smaller. Works fine.

Would an adapter from your local hardware plumbing section work? I would think the only issue would be if it doesn't seat all the way....

yeah, I went through all the other options, and the fifteen minutes I spent on the lathe were well well worth the effort.

The end of the sender kind of wants to be in the coolant, and a thread adapter will put the sender pretty far away from it.

kind of hard to get an adapter that will allow a part that is bigger than the hole, to fit into the hole. Hence my suggestion to make the part smaller, so it fits in the hole.

I know half a dozen guys with lathes, in the small town I live in.

Is your reluctance to the manifold location due to the location or do you have to modify the manifold?
How about a thermostat housing, mounted sender unit . GM used that location for a few years. I have also seen one mounted in the water pump but not sure how well it worked.
I have always had better result with mounting them in the intake manifold.

A lot of Chevy trucks have the sensor mounted in the top of the thermostat housing.

Standard TS75. Says in the Standard book that it has a 5/8 thread, and notice it has a tapered seat, just like it's designed to go in a hole for a mechanical temp gauge. Which it is...since the older Volvos have a mechanical temp gauge. Might could make it work, if you use lots of sealer?

Let us know how the threads fit.

  20. UNF is not pipe thread. Not a good match. Still being as it's brass, it might mangle itself to a seal. Or break.
Not like I haven't seen something like this attempted before...fail miserably...

Let us know how this works for you.
