I bought this axle from fellow Hamber, and a great hottrodder,D Conrad, and we are both stumped on the manufacturer,it measures 46 3/4 from kingpin to kingpin. Its very heavy,i dont believe its cast, forged maybe, but it seems like it was milled out of a solid piece of steel.Any help would be appreciated...
I would go with the machined theory as if someone had went through the trouble of making dies they would have made lots of them. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks rottenleonard,Im still going to keep looking, for the maker, because i would like to buy another one for a future project...
I'm thinking I saw something about an axle like that in Street Rodder or some other rod rag a few years ago. Machined out of a solid chunk of steel if memory serves right. Also comparatively expensive from what I recall. The latest piece for the Billet rodders.
Several companies have made of few axles like yours. The Deuce Factory made a stainless one but with round ends. JHRS made some out of aluminum I believe and P&J offers an aluminum version but I have never seen one exactly like yours. I am sure someone on here will know who made it. It is a nice looking axle with the milled slots and holes.
I can tell you one thing for sure, If that was milled from a solid piece of steel, Someone has alot of money in that axle....It looks to me like a CE axle that someone has done a **** ton of custom work on. but the view of the pic is hard to tell for sure.
A chunk of steel that something is machined out of is a billet, so...... That's a good looking piece of hardware.
Billet can refer to almost any metal. It is a chunk that has been melted, poured and partially rolled to a rough rectangular form, from this form it can either be forged or rolled to many different shapes. Ironically most aluminum that is called billet in the automotive aftermarket is not billet, but is polished, cast aluminum. This is similar to the misnomer of calling nitrous oxide (chemical formula NO2) NOS which is a brand name for a Nitrous Oxide System manufacturer Back to the topic! That ****er looks like it was carved out of a billet of steel on a milling machine or machining center, then had the **** polished out of it and then was chromed. It could be one of a kind done by an old machinist like me on his lunch hour when the boss wasn't looking, needed a big lunch box though!
My bad,i always thought anything billet was made of aluminum,I learned something new today, thanks and thanks...
I dont think that CenPen has sold those for perhaps 10 years....I bought one in 2003 or 04 and it got lost in shipping....and they couldnt replace it so I got a refund. Their web site hasnt changed for 10 years either...at least the products page hasnt.
Cen-pen makes or made these in steel and stainless, I don't think they made aluminum. All were CNC carved from solid billets of material. Steve
Mopar Jack, post 22 I think I paid about $650. UPS lost it when it broke thru the shipping box. They delivered an empty box. I got a refund and some UPS truck got a beam axle. I think it was aluminum but then, i never saw it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Sure looks like a chromed Cen-Pen. 9 holes per side and same center web profile. I've run a CNC mill and would offer there's a lot of mill time in that axle which equates to cost. Neat piece.
Regardless of the material, he had to have lost his **** on the machine time to make the danged things. When UPS lost ours, we tried to buy another one but he never answered the phone or returned emails. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
