Technical Who or where do I get a custom windshield

I have a chopped top that needs a custom windshield and I have no clue where to get one for it.

 

What vehicle?

Call your local gl*** shop, there's usually at least one guy there that isn't afraid to cut one. And if it's flat gl*** it's no problem at all.

 

A curved one-off will be fun..................... I sure hope it is flat.
Apparently this is the thing that brings a lot of builds to a standstill. I would think that heat slumping would be the only option. Quite a complicated process including making a one-off heatproof mold.

 

Well, I was hoping there is a company that specialized in cutting windshields for custom cars.
It's a 51 Olds.

If you have done your chop to accept a cut down original windshield, that can be done.
Or if you are lucky enough to find a windshield from another car that has the shape you need and can be cut down to suit, but that would be extremely lucky..........

 

There are people who will cut it for you. Nobody I've ever heard of will guarantee that it won't break and you will have to buy more...until you get a finished product.. Cutting curved gl*** is part skill and part luck.

Bob's Cl***ic Auto Gl*** probably has them. Ask Bob if he knows who will cut it.

Get some old gl*** and a wet saw. practice it really is easy. I would do it for you if had the gl***.

 

I have always heard that you cut the windshield and make the body fit the gl***. If I had your car I would get a stock gl*** and lay it over the opening and see where it needs to be cut. Many ways to remove the offending gl***. Masking and sand blasting, or cutting with a wet wheel grinder, or a gl*** cutter and flaming alcohol. Good luck.

lexan is a good alternative.....looks like it would work for your application.....you can also heat it up to make it conform to the curvature you want....

 

It is a great choice..............Just be aware that it may not meet the vehicle codes in all places.
And at a guess, I would say that is what is in there now going by the picture.......

 

It does have lexan now. I'm afraid of rocks breaking through.

 

You might try to find a place that makes armored cars like the presidential cars as they make special windows an such. Just an idea

 

Lots of great U tube videos on this.It can be done but start collecting your make and model windshields as you may break a couple BUT first practice on any model old salvage yard ones with cracks ,chipped or scratched .I know of a sandblasting way and a gl*** cutting way.

 

If it is Lexan a rock will not break it. Plexiglas will shatter and make shards that will cut you.

 

Rocks cannot break through lexan..do you mean falling rock zones and such...they will go through a gl*** windshield easily...Lexan is fine ...keep it...have fun...

 

Try a company called Pilkington Gl***. They are global so thought they would have a places in the States. They can make spe******t windshields.

Lexan is not legal for a windshield in most, if not all states. It will not p*** a safety inspection for most street driven car related governing bodies. So unless you are making a trailer queen show car use safety gl***. Your problem is not new, and there is an awful lot of chops that never get finished because they cannot get gl*** to fit the new opening. You have a very cool looking car and I hope you can get this solved.

 

I worked for green & son autogl*** for years and we cut plenty of curved gl***. The statement above about no guarantees on breaking your windshield is true, gl*** breaks. I've had multiple request for the early olds windshield in the past year and my suppliers say no can do, so having an extra windshield just in case could be an issue. Metal work is easy when it comes to chopping a car, the gl*** and trim is the challenge. It can be done, and I'm sure you'll find a guy that can do it if you keep looking. They're still out there

 

The more skill you have, the less luck you need, but it will never be 100%. Gl*** is funny stuff and the Goddess of Gl*** has a wicked sense of humor.

 

I wonder if a waterjet could be used? I have seen some really cool thick gl*** items cut out using a computer guided system. Not sure if a windshield could be done. There are custom waterjjet places around.

 

I'm thinking Bob's Cl***ic Gl*** in Oregon has the Olds windshields. I bought one from him a few years back to put in a 50 chevy to eliminate the double gl***. He may even custom cut one. Worth a phone call to see what he has.
