Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BJR, Mar 11, 2015.

  1. 8 years and counting,it looks as good today with the exception of scratches from use as it did the day we painted the truck.

I would us Kirker again tomorrow. HRP

  2. So what's better ?

A gallon of mid coat that costs $204.56
    Or
A gallon of mid coat that costs over $1400.00 with the sticker?

Well let's be fair because you'd have to spend 490 to get your first gallon mixed, but you'd have enough tint to mix enough to coat a battleship at each additional gallon at $200.00.

You need to know what you're paying for. It's not just by price tag and logo.
Spend em if you got em i guess.

  3. I wonder if your painter friend would shoot my truck in latex and give me that guarantee. :D

Any decent quality paint taken care of should last the life of the vehicle. That would be paints that most of us have the equipment to use and a process that we are at least vaguely familiar with.

I use a specific brand of paint because I have used it a long time and it sprays well for me. I am not a pro but if you get around painters that actually do it c for a living they have a tendency to stay with one brand or at least most of the painters that I have known in the past are that way.

We on the other hand are not professional and have not developed a style of laying on paint, so for us maybe experimenting with different brands and processes is not that big a deal. :)

  4. One other reason for brand loyalty is the accessories and additives cost plenty but they swap over because of compatibility.

it boils down to, people like to pay for the name.

for me, a good kirker paint job will get it done just like a good PPg would

The Ducati I painted was just last year, so I can't speak for how long it will hold up, but if it is cared for, washed and waxed regularly they all will last for a reasonable time while if it is left unprotected from the elements the best paint job will not.

I used Summit metalic Silver. I think it was $100/gal with activater and 1qt. of thinner in a kit.
    Sprayed and covered real nice.

What modern paint should be used to paint a hot rod, so it looks like hot rods did in the 50's or 60's. If base coat clear coat is used, it makes a hot rod look like a show rod, or a street rod. Don't get me wrong, I like street rods too, it's just that BCCC paint doesn't look period correct, or in the case of restored historic hot rods, it makes them look over restored.

  10. Realistically none. Modern paint looks nothing like lacquer does. There are some that can get it to look close by mixing clear into single stage in increasing quantities as each coat is applied but other than the ability to do that is is not going to happen with modern paints.

Is there any paint that is produced today that is similar to the old DuPont Centari from the 80's? I always thought that it was good paint, easy to work with, wasn't over the top, and sold for a reasonable price.

A better depth and vintage look is best achieved by sanding and buffing a solids based color versus a clear coat cut and buffed finish. Kind of like new chrome versus old chrome in thw depth achieved

Try BASF Limco acrylic enamel with a hardener, flows and looks like Centari

Great photo, took a while for me to figure out it was your reflection in the car you painted. At least that's what I think it is.

Eastwood epoxy primer on my garbage bin. I am using it on a current project that will be top coated.. Eastwood epoxy standing up well 4 years out in the elements but is not as hard as U-Utech epoxy IMO. TCP global urethane we found to be very durable, great finish and easy to use,,,squirted a daily driver with the stuff and will use again. $140 for a kit,,i think its a good bang for your buck... I would never a load a spray gun with $1200 a gallon paint with me at the trigger

The only issue I have had with Kirker is you need to save the batch number that is printed on the label.
They mix it in large batches and save a small amount for repairs at a later date.
How do I know this ? I painted a Chevy p.u. and had a spot that needed fixing and ordered some more of the same color and it was off enough that Ray Charles noticed it.
I called the Kirker rep and he told me he needed the batch number so he could pull some from that batch. The colors vary from batch to batch. Call it human error or differences in the base chemicals.
I had to respray the whole truck because I did not have the batch number.

  20. I spent my entire life in the paint industry and manufacturing paint has always been done in batches, and yes there are differences in batches. it doesn't matter if it's automotive paint or house paint.

Even the expensive spectrometers can't get it perfect, always buy a little extra. HRP
