My 65 f100 with a freshly rebuilt 5.0... exhaust past the cab... makes me smell like ive been mowing the lawn and weedeating for an hour.. kind of annoying, But, I like the joy of driving more than I hate the smell of exhaust. Of course I have a 6 x 6 hole in the floor where my gennie shifter is... and a few holes in the firewall that arent sealed..

A guy around here told me to put some magnaflow hi flow catalytic converters on it to keep smell down... they are fairly small and are prettty straight through flow. eh. dunno if it will help or not.. anyone have any opinions on this?

Would make my wife alot happier too. lol.

I used to use that new car spell from PepBoys for deoderate. Dance with a gal and she would think you really had something out in the parking. Talk about being dissappointed when they really saw what I was driving. It kinda had a leather and a new fabric smell to it. I use Benzall in my track roadster and there is no way in the world I am in a hurry to get that smell off. It reminds me of the 40's when my dad had midgets and he would use Castor oil in them. Especially the ones with outboards in them. The smell and watching the tires rolling around, the sound, the hair all messed up that is Hot rodding to me.

DO NOT put convertors on a car that has no feedback or isn't tuned within a gnat's eye of perfect!!!!
They rely on a pretty close A/F ratio tolerance to live. Sure they were on 75-80 cars without tight fuel control (remember the mixture screw plugs and air pumps?), but they also could and did catch fire!!!
Is your car built to handle a glowing exhaust system?

the build statement was not aimed at you it was in general by looking at your car i would say the reason is your headers and the open roof but mainly the headers...... i had a 27 with lakes headers and it smelled like exhaust put some turnouts or turndowns on the ends it will help tremendously.

  13. Who smells? I do! Between old engine odor and road grime stuck to my sun-lotioned head I must make a great impression walking into a store after a days cruise.

  15. CO2 can kill you, I wouldn't **** around with it, seal the firewall, seal the floor and around any shifter boot, make sure the door seals work, and run the pipes at least to the back wheels. I have a buddy who got g***ed on a hot day in a Suburban he drove for his job that had bad manifolds the company wouldn't fix. Even with the windows up and the A/C on... he was lucky they needed him for something bad enough to send someone to look for him when he didn't answer the radio.

He gets headaches now just being around that atmosphere, he couldn't work anymore, and his short term memory is better than it was then but I still find myself having to tell him the same things 2 or 3 times once in a while. I forget stuff myself as it is, it would really piss me off if my memory got so bad I needed to make lists to remind me of everything I had to do in a day.

Well..., I guess I'm going to have to apply the Dolce & Gabana perfume with a crop duster, just so I can still be feminine while simultaniously being a hot rodder too.:)

That stinks. Unfortunately with early hot rods I feel like theres no way to eliminate fumes and exhaust from entering. luckily my coupe has no windows, and no roof...So I get more fresh air then anything....but I think youd be hard pressed to find an early open wheel hot rod that doesnt get fumes.

Real hot rods have squeaks and rattles, exhaust are loud and have that old car smell that been there for 50 years , leak water on rainy days and get very hot inside because we don't have air conditioning. Ain't it just great ,wouldn't change it for anyhing. As one ninety year old women asked me at a show , can I get in it to get that old car smell. She said they all used to smell like that!

I've learned to roll mine out of the garage before I fire it up, it helps.

I had the "g***y smell" problem with my coupe, too, when I first got it on the road. My problem was leaking gaskets at the gas tank filler neck and the fuel gauge sending unit. Made my own gaskets from thinner gasket material than the fat resilient rubber gaskets that came with the tank and the sender unit, and I've been leak free since.

I still get the gas fume smell once in awhile, but I'll chalk that up to the exhaust dumping right in front of the door. I did install a vintage air unit that helps, though. See the picture........

    By the way......great-looking car!

today I smelled the same getting out, as when I got in. Every once in a while depending on the wind, I get a whiff of engine from the road draft tube, when stopped at a light, other than that nothing.

I reduced alot of my HOT ROD Stink problem by increasing the fuel richness of the carbs at idle and cruise.

A lean running engine stinks waaaaay worse than a rich running engine unless it is super fat.

Sometimes a little more fuel will clean up the funk smell.

Watch those exhaust fumes. I had a big-*** hole open up in my rusted trunk floor last year. Driving home with the windows all open and my head hanging out I still got g***ed. Sick as a dog. It took most of a day before I felt anywhere near normal again.

  28. HAHAHA....well I hear where you're comin from mate its a hotrod and all that kinda ****. Mine used ta make me sick, sorted it out, still goes HARD, and its still a hotrod.

Some engines, have too much overlap/cam duration and spit fuel rich fumes. Some have poorly designed exh systems that **** fumes into the cab. Flat panels at the rear of some rides have a tendency to **** in fumes. Leaky headers with holes in the firewall. Holes in the floor (WTF??) That coupled with hot cams is a smelly and potentially dangerous combo....I know, my old MoPar made me sick a few times. Eyes stinging, clothes smelling bad, interior stinks.....not good.

Going to an early grave from CO poisoning aint cool either !!
