I bought the 40 Dodge when I was 17 and still in high school, my father took me out for a few times in the car and I distinctly remember forgetting to release the hand brake and having it start to smoke going down the road after a mile or so........this pic would have been taken soon after I bought it, only colour pic I can find actually..........andyd

  2. Dad, 1950 Chevrolet 3100, 3 on the tree. Sadly, very few people know how to drive a 3 on the tree anymore

  3. I turned 16 in May and once school was out, Coach Novotny taught Driver's Ed during summer break. A local car dealer had an arrangement with the high school to supply a new(ish) stripped down Chevy, base model with automatic trans. The class was also basic and geared to get you able to pass the written and behind the wheel tests. The cost was affordable, couldn't of been much more than $20. When us students finished the course, a state cop came to the school and we tested in the same Chevy. My recall bone is pretty rusty but I think the state fees were covered with the class fees. At home, the folks had a '54 Pontiac and a '58 Dodge wagon and I just started driving 'em without my folks looking over my shoulder, first just short trips but gradually, out hoonin' with my buds for the evening.

At 18, I bought my first car with the first taste of a manual, a '49 De Soto (3-on-the-tree), that I promptly named The Iron Lung. I taught myself to do the clutch/stick dance. After I figured out the clutch, I was hooked on manuals and always owned and drove them whenever I could and still do.

  6. I remember when I took my drivers test the officer said "so, I see you've been driving for awhile now seeing you only use one hand." and he was right too.

  7. My sister, when I was about 10. That was in a '63 Valiant . My dad taught me how to drive a tractor when I was about 7. One day I will sit for my licence.

  8. I did a lot of my learning on a tractor, but the old Italian guy that lived across the street from me when I was un junior high had a '48/'49 Chrysler that he always left the keys in. We used to joy ride it and learned a lot by feel. We always put gas in it and lefty it where we found it and I am sure that he knew what we were doing. He was old not stupid.

I think probably my actual real legit learning to drive was in my Uncles Wells' '62 Ford short bed (it was a 352 truck). I started driving it down the dump road when I was 12, I used it for my driving test when I was 14 so I could get a hardship license. Funny thing was I had to test again to get my real driver's license. Took that in a '70 in a '69 Falcon wagon.
