I dont know where it was finished or how it was transported. I am only repeating what Gene said. Maybe it was damaged in a trailer. But I thought he said it was flown in. Irregardless. It was flawless and I'm glad Troy won.
$40.00 is cheap, there is a certain shop out here on the west coast that has built a few Ridler winners in the last 6 years and the shop rate is higher than that, If you read my post I did not say it could not be worth 2.5 mil, I was just stating that every year the cost is all over the board and its tough to get the real story......I really dont care, if I had 2.5mil laying around it would not go into a car.........
Oh sure. It's that easy. I've done the CNC stuff for 20+ years. The 32 he did a couple of years ago looked like steelies with trim rings and caps. I'd like to hear about the config of these. In the days of billet and polish the ones on the 32 were kinda cool and I'm not a billet fan in most cases.
I'm curious how much was in those jackstands alone! Troy certainly outdid himself on this one no matter what your perspective is.
Yes....I'm a smartass. But if it's any consolation, I loved the 32 wheels...especially the trim rings....great idea, billet wheels without the billet look.
he he.. Point taken. The trim rings were the cool part of those wheels. That's y I was wondering about the story in these. I liked the satan coated nickel plate on his stuff lately
$2.5 mil?? for that kind of change I hope it had wings and plasma drive so I could take it to shows on Mars and Saturn (cruising the Rings).
I am so Naive..... When I was told 2-1/2...I said 250,000 DOLLARS! He smiled at me and said... noooo.....million. Its a big mans world out there. I like the little poor part of my world. We are doing the right thing here on the Hamb guys.... Thats exactly why I like this group and this place.
Next month just go to "Planeorama"....it'll be there. Of course the ratplanes in the basement will be there too.....flat black with red propellers and EVERYBODY will be wearing patina'd flight jackets and goggles with "real deal" plate glass lenses.....and don't miss the "orca stewardesses"!!!!!
I'm glad the Troy won it and I really liked the car. Unlike the last several winners, this car still retained it's IDENITY!. Yeah it had a million modifications (at about 2.50 each) but it still looked like a 36 Ford. A very cool car. BB
The owner bought this car when he was 9 years old for $25 dollars and has owned it for 48 years. I really don't think he will ever sell it. The guy owns a trucking company. When he was up on stage thanking eveyone, one of the folks he thanked was his family and made a comment to the effect he was spending the kids inheritance. The crowd laughed, it was kinda funny. Troy won builder of the year and in Troy fashion gave the credit to his build team and had them all come up on stage. I swear the average age LOOKED to be mid 20's. They all seemed to be babies except for Moose and Jack.
The crew at Rad Rides by Troy are the most under-rated,under-exposed craftsmen in the whole industry. They do turn out some great cars.
I dont believe that Troy built this car from the start. It was started at Hot Rod Garage, Bill Lang being the head metal man on the job, in Denton Maryland. Bill was at the Autorama. I know that Bill did the chop, and a lot of work on the trunk, and im sure other areas on the body in the early stages. Bill chopped my 47 ford, and he is an excellant metal man. He left the Hot Rod Garage, and I think after years of slow progress, the car went to Troys. Not trying to take any fame away from Troy (and Im not sure that anything Ridler quality has ever come from Bill's shop, or the Hot Rod Garage), but there were other shops and builders involved in seriouse portions of the build.
It was a different car that was damaged in transport. And yes this was the most impressive show car built to date! But we had way more fun in the basement and didnt come close to spending even one million dollors
I just wish that art-deco rear end with the inboard finned drums was on the back of some kind of modified or under an RPU or '33 Ford where it'd be seen better - Wonder if that was one of the custom castings... be nice if they made a few more of those, huh? Way out there, but damn pretty.
Everyone is complaining about the cars upstairs or the gold chainers at the autorama, with out the upstairs there would be no downstairs at COBO.....sometimes we have to put up with some bad to get some good.... John
That car's impressive! The work and talent that goes into those things is unreal. I think the steering wheel is out of a 50 to 55 VW. It's called a Batwing steering wheel. Dean
Could someone post a normal photo of the car, you know, wheels on it and doors, hood, and trunk closed? Nothing wrecks the look of a car than opened components.
I couldn't agree more. Leave it to Troy Trapenier to win the Ridler with a more tasteful, traditional looking car. Some of the stuff they build is definately not in the HAMB style but the level of fabrication they are working on is so far beyond anyone else out there. Just look at the Blowfish salt flat car they built as an example. The first car I saw from their shop was the twin turbo Biscane they built several years back and they flogged the hell out of that car.
Glad Troy 's work got it- at least he really builds the things. Maybe some day it will be driven you never know.
Right there with ya on that call. This is the place to be. Low buck, low tech and High ispiration and dedication to "in the day". It all about having fun with your car, both building and driving and, well, sometimes breaking down. There is always a story or two to tell when your involved in the whole process of a project. Sharing the experience and information learned and earned is reward enough. No trophys needed. Fast cars and good friends...... priceless.
that is the car i figured would win. unlike some years i did'nt have the least bit of trouble in deciding which one I would pick for the honor this year. it seemed (to me at least) the nicest of the great 8. at least in design if nothing else. i crawled around on my hands and knees checking out the detail underneath. just amazing. certainly light years boyond anything i could ever build and much nicer than i think i would even WANT to build. i'd certainly lose my mind trying to build anything near that nice.
Beautiful car. The details are awsome. Congrats to Troy and his guys. I hope to see the car in person some time.
the workmanship on that car was amazing. if you took the time to get down and look under the car, the engineering and design then the machining on the suspension was incredible. they musta had a ton of hours in maching out the parts .detail everywhere. it deserves to win.
