You are definitely not alone in your dilema. A good friend of mine won (yes I said WON) a completely restored 1959 Corvette 2 summers ago. He was in the process of getting into the old car hobby as he had just gotten out of college, gotten a great job and had some disposable income. We were wading through piece of crap pre war projects at Columbus goodguys when he got the call that he had won. Now, he is instantly a Vette guy. So here is an early 20s, good looking guy driving a shiny, collectable, gold chainer Covette. You should see the looks he gets!
He has since bought a '40 Stude project to build and drive so he can go to more shows with us, the pre-49 crowd. But he really gets irked at the way people treat him, the "Vette guy" as well!

Anyone here have that list from Super Chevy years ago that listed all the different Mustang guys. That was funny as hell, and I'd love to see it again.

This reminds me of all my co-workers who think that buying a new Harley and another $1500 of H/D apparel makes them a "biker".

Its simple, we are "Gearheads" and always will be.

I grew up with cars and wrenched on anything that would burn gas, from the Mini Bikes to my current Chevelle and all the crap in between. I have owned at least one from the big three and even some furrin' stuff, still have my 510, and wrenched on a Digger or two. I like them all!

If it burns gas, eats your money like a Vegas slot machine and pisses you off in the middle of the night when trying to make bakersfield and you don't set the fucker on fire, then yeah, you might be a gearhead.

Just my crazy opinion, yours may differ!

  10. Like the old joke "What's the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine? A porsche has the pricks on the inside."

I'm in the same boat as plan9, at least thats what I think of myself. Others tell me the opposite. I do have a broad spectrum of what I like though. I hate myself. later shawn

"I own a Vette, but sure as fuck wouldn't consider myself a Vette "guy". And i'm building a 32, but fo sho won't be a 32 "guy". I'd like to think i'm just a guy (part time dickhead) with a Vette and a 32. So what makes someone a whatever "guy"?"

Awww, geeezus, that's the kind of question a broad asks when she wants to 'bond' !

Let's grab a couple of beers and get back to wrenching. :D

  15. In a broad sense, this is what life's all about.

A lot of people are so insecure that they spend a lot of time looking for something to join; once they find something that accepts them, they spend a lot more time ridiculing anyone who doesn't live up to their imagined standards. The later in life it happens...the more fanatic they are. This applies equally to cars, car models or brands, horses, religion, golfing, or whatever the fuck can be thought of. :D

Me, I like anything with an engine, for the most part. A friend has a Porsche. He's fabbing up his own Eaton blower kit, intake, & EFI system & is cracking the Bosch software himself. A gearhead? Definitely. Low-buck? Yeah...it's all used or home fabricated. Is it an American V-8? Well, no, but it runs pretty damn good. I like it, & it's about as far from my '55 as it could get & still be gasoline-fueled....but he's a cool guy. And a gearhead. :)

I've got an unrestored 65 Vette that's all stock and looks pretty good. I've also got a beater 50 Ford 2 door sedan. They're both a blast to drive. I think there's a lot of us out there that don't fit any mold and that's cool. Your cars rock pure and simple. If others don't get it that's their problem.

What's wrong with just being a car guy.

I got a Vette, 2- 55's Plymouth and Chevy, A Dart, A Chevelle, El Camino,

    chit what else?

I am looking for a Viper, damn what would that make me?

  19. I remember a Vette just like the one you have pictured for sale at a lot in Pasadena when i was a kid. I had a 64 Vette roadster at the time but always wanted a fastback. Anyway, the one on the lot looked like yours, was MINT, and priced way out of my reach at $2500.

  20. labels..suck. what makes a person a "----- guy" is lack of vision and a " i wanna be like you" mentality. i have a chopped 50 merc, a 57 chevy, a 93 Z-28 and a 80 corvette. i love 'em all. i never understood why some people go through life with sincless self-imposed limits.

  21. i'm a simple guy i like loud fast & rough around the edges

  22. I've always called myself a "Old car guy". There's many cars I like, but a short list of what I would own. Merc ,Shoebox,'32,'33,Anglia,Fiat Topolino. That's about it. Ocasionally I see something that grabs me. TetanusShots Hudson or Coupe, the '38 Westergaurd style Ford that Cole did,'55 Gassers,Lunar Lander,Roths Druid Princess.

Personally, I'm an old car guy. I really hate newer cars. I like to think I'm a creator guy because I do great things with my hands. I'm a Harley guy for sure, and I've been called a hundred different things by friends, acquaintances, and enemies...most of them true. One things for sure...I like what I like, build what I want, drive and ride what I want and to hell with anyone who has a problem with it.

  30. Talking about Vette's. I've got a 60 that I bought in 1976 ($2500) & just put away due to many family issues (single with an 18 month old son). Back then alot of people I met in the Detroit area were Vette restorer sobs so I chose a different path & didn't do anything until the time was right. I'm putting this one together (soon) non-stock to save money but I'm not going to chop it up either. Balanced 350 & 350 turbo, Latham 4 carb, Halibrand mags & dechromed. I had 3 other customized vette's (57,60, 62) in the late 60's that had been drag cars, I converted them to be streetable & had a great time with them.

I still can't take most of that restorer crowd.
I at times thought that Hamb was totally against Vette owners so the reaction to this question is better than I expected. Thanks.
