Its all about preference. If I was building a 49 Merc and wanted it low but comfortable, I might go for bags. But on the otherhand, I dont care for the air tank and all the other garbage assosiated with them. The ride from them is great, but some of the suspension in the older cars is also preety smooth. But nothing turns me off quicker than seeing a nice model A with IFS on it, there is nothing like the look of that straight axle up front. Just my 2 cents.

I've never thought airbags were dumb... but I've always thought laying rail (or laying rockers) looks retarded.... whether it's a model A or a 54 Chevy or an S-10. There. I said it.

"Hmmmm... let's see if we can get the ENTIRE CAR below the scrub line!

Analslime, A bag to support a spring is hardly an adjustable air ride system.

True they have evolved, but they were and are much more than a spring support, they were and are fully adjustable and tuneable ways to preload for a straight launch/and squat- my point was the use of bags are not new to performance applications.

I asked this question a few weeks ago, and got torn apart. I thought abtu it, and you are building what you want!!!! This is your frigging car, and no one elses's. As long as it is safe, go for it. Those of you bagging on others for being different... Shutup. About 40-50 yeasr ago, someone was different, and that changed the way people think today. Meaning. One person sat down and thought "outside the box" I am sure everyone said you can't do that... That is stupid,... But that one person changed the way everyone thought from that point on. So if you want IFS, have fun. If you want Bags, have fun. If you want Coilovers, have fun. If you want stock, ahve fun... Do what you want, and HAVE FUN!!!!

Well said Tingler. It never ceases to amaze me how some can't resist making rules for a hobby, which is almost entirely about breaking rules.

Bagged cars can look great and bagged cars can look awful, just like un-bagged ones. It's all in the execution and the results left up to personal taste.

I can't say for certain, but one might assume that any of the big rigs that have run on the salt for records, were bagged. Not cars obviously but sorta meets your criteria.

Laying frame and/or body can look cool on the right ride but what happens when an air line or bag fails and your car hits the deck at 65-75mph? You may be more likely to get her to a safe stop in one piece if it's on a big 50's or 60's car. I can't imagine such a failure on a little open wheeled car at those speeds (Pole vault?). My '58 lays frame in the rear and it's always on my mind when cruising down the freeway. Something to think about...

They bag them just because they can. Lemmings act the same way.

  25. in my eyes...bags is just a means to the same end traditionalists have gotten to by different means for many years....aint nothing WRONG with changing the lighting on the painting now and then, as long as it remains the same painting....my son is gonna do bags on his 34 pickup open wheeled rod..they wont be visible. He just wants the adjustability. Hell, Who DOESNT like the looks of a LOW rod PLUS have the ability to drive it normally on normal roads at the flip of a switch? just my 2 cents

i set here and read all this and it got me to thinking just the other day i was thinking about putting air bags on my 41 and getting it low, real low......and it never dawned on me that it would not be traditional because i had just read a few articles about airbags and lowering from some 57 and 58 rod n custom mags......i think they was building "traditional" style rods then. maybe not everyone lowered there hotrods or bagged them way back when, but i bet a few did.

ok, i gotta admit that i quit reading after 15-20 responses here, so this might have come up:

there used to be a guy from iowa that came to the buzzard run (macon, MO) every year in a model A coupe. the car was full fendered and had bags on the rear. BUT, the reason was that he pulled a camper trailer behind the car and could adjust the air pressure for with/without the trailer attached.

What is a "Hot Rod"? The cars you guys are emulating were built out of necessity. The need for speed! If those guys had disc brakes, they would have used them. If they had fuel injection, they would have used it. If they would have had turbos, they would have used them. As long as it looks like a "Hot Rod", what's the big deal anyway? It's a piece of artwork. The real Hot Rodder is that a**hole kid at the end of the block that races by your house every day in his turbo'd Civic.
