Why are spotlights installed on customs

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by junkyardjeff, Mar 17, 2009.

  1. WOW! I'd almost forgot about those. My dad said there was a reason for those back in the New York 60's. I forgot the supposed reason, but they supposedly had one. I never saw them since I moved to SoCal in 69. But they sure were everywhere in Brooklyn

I was told the same thing by a very knowledgeable hot rodder. Makes the most sense to me.

I remember my dad put one on an MGB gt in the 70's when I was a kid, we lived in rual Ohio, so they actually were very very useful. lots of places there didn't have street lights, and dark roads without any kinds of reflective markings. the other thing is we had a lot of deer. you could turn the light to shine ahead off the edge of the road, and see them before they ran out in front of you.

There is no explination , either you like them or not .
What does it remind you of , customs are round bodys made smooth by shaving and molded radious with dual Appletons pointing up and out !

"...By the Fifties, just the look of having a spot was enough to lend a "custom" touch, so they didn't even have to operate — also, the dummy spots were cheaper and easier to install. By the Sixties, spots were pretty much "out" but in the Seventies and later they came back as a retro item..."

    Very true.

In 1960 my brother put a set of "dummy spots" on his new 60 Ford just because it was the in thing at the time. In the midwest we were always a couple of years behind the coast trends, but we were still cool.

because they look like a pair of perfect ***s?
    or...
for looking for addresses when delivering pizzas?
for poaching deer at night, they freeze when you spot light 'em?
    for cow tipping lighting?
for seeing the outline of betty's *** better through her skirt?
for lighting up a drag racing road late at night?
for scaring your buddies into thinking your a cop?
for that imprmtu party in the woods at night?
    for making awesome shadow puppets?

    Or what abc123 said.

I'd like them on my truck, but PA has a law against real ones. But dummy spots seem kind of vain and useless unless it's a real kustom--and the truck ain't even close.

Damn straight ! Those were the days !
There was nothing like the drive-ins and the home theater doesn't even come close ! There are still a couple drive-ins where I live that we go to . There is nothing like sitting in your ride drinking a cold one with your Lady in the summertime !

To anyone putting dummy spots on their cars,,,please put them in the right place. Real spots went through the post and ended inside so the handle was easy to get to and not in the way. Put them on like they are really going through the post. I have seen some real strange angles and odd mounting of dummy lights and have to suppress a laugh when viewing a 300 grand custom with dummy spots mounted like the handle would come out in the engine or under the dash or halfway up the post.
