Why aren't these more popular ?

That big finned '60 wagon is all kinds of cool. And a 2 door conversion on those cars are as close to a bolt-in as they come.

I'm not sure if it's fair to say they're not popular either. Have you checked the prices on these things lately? Even the linked example says "Sold" and had a price tag of $9K, that's for an unrestored car with bad paint. Convertibles restored properly bring $50-$100K, and 2 door hardtops aren't cheap either.

Maybe they're not for everybody, but they're starting to sell in the price range of the vastly popular 55-57 Chevy. They were very prone to rust also, and no availible reproduction parts, so the supply of cars is very small.

 

If it's not traditional, why are we talking about it HERE??

I had a 66 Chevelle wagon , 67 Chrysler Town & Country wagon , 72 Ford wagon , 84 Chevy wagon , 96 Taurus wagon .

I always wanted to find a late 50's Chrysler he**** to hot rod, but unfortunately it seems most funeral homes wanted Cadillacs. I love the mid to late 50's Mopar wagons. The '60 and '61, I'm not as crazy about, just because of the weird design changes they were doing. This was at the end of Exner's era and it seems like he didn't know what to do, now that fins were going out of style. The '60 Savoy is *****in though. I wouldn't mind having one of those.

Hell just painting the white part the same color as the rest of the car would be an improvement.

You guys forget before there were minivans, this is what mom drove. I think rarity has made wagons cool these days but I have to agree that 60 with the weird *** front is pretty ugly.

Lot of mixed comments on the wagon. I thought more would like it actually, due to the fact you don't see so many. Plus, I thought the fins would help it. I still think it is *****in.

This car is none of those. Not many around. Wagons are not trendy. It's 9,000 friggin dollars which is out of the budget of most buying a hobby car.

This of course makes it perfect for a custom ride (except for that price tag).

 

i agree, but i do think that wagons are becoming more trendy than they ever have been.

As far as looks go, granted some of the design cues are a bit over the top, but there wont be another guy with one like it at 99% of the shows you take it to, which is more than i can say about GMs or Fords... To each thier own as far as taste goes. ( i personally love early sixties so-ugly-only-a-mother-could-love mopars but thats just me)

i came across an ad on craigslist not too long ago for a 61 newyorker with swivel seats and factory air, that was from an estate. the ad had an asking price of $1500, to which i promply replied that i'd take it, sight unseen. Aparently i was a**** a bunch of other like minded cats, because it turned into a bidding war, and i have since seen the car on ebay for many more thousands than i could swing for a car that needs to be totally done... sorry, i'm babbling.

 

I think the problem with Virgil is that his designs had too many "marvelous details" combined into one design. It is hard to find two lines together in harmony on anything he did. Ha!

 

i dig 'em. if i didnt need a truck i would probably have an old wagon or a early 50's chevrolet suburban.

They are big, ugly and have 4 doors.

They aren't popular because '55-'56-'57 chevies, '32 Fords, and '40 Fords are.

Those wagons are everything that the previously mentioned "popular" cars, aren't and nothing that they are.

You asked. But hey, if you like them, then by all means go out and buy/build one into your dream car.

 

I'm glad that they are not all that popular, because that means there are that many more for ME and friends of these to have one, and have it NOT cost an arm and a leg!

Besides, most of the Tri-Five Chevy wagon owners just WISHED their wagons looked as cool as the late '50s and early '60s Mopar wagons do! They, like all the other "popular" car owners, jump on the "me-too!" wagon (pun intended) and run with the alleged cool crowd. Go for it! To each their own! I prefer unique to me-too.

 

I like them, but they still aren't traditional hot rods. I would have thought this thread to be closed 90 posts ago.

 

Mine is a traditional tow car.
