I like to blast the car as soon as possible.... doesn't always happen as soon as you want. Blasting early gives the blasting material time to work its way out. Everytime you beat on the car or blow it off more stuff comes out.

A lot of you guys missed the point. It's all about leaving the rust on when you're working on the car.

Bad Bob...I sorta liked it before. Paint your motor now!! Orange motors and green cars just look wrong to me. Looks like some sorta pumkin theme. A black motor would look so much better! Then again a orange motor looks wrong with just about any color other than black.

I don't want a nice paint job, mine has 50 year old paint on it and that's all I need.

I did get your point, but when the Patina word came up I just couldn't resist a little patina talk. Sorry I got off track.

It depends on the car,if it's going to be a daily beater, fix everything else and drive it, some dummy will hit it sooner or later at the store with a shopping kart anyway. If it's your hot rod and you can garage it , paint it if you like.

  9. ... to leave absoloutely no doubt that yes, it's a steel bodied car...

I could probably come up with a top ten list for this given some time.

I can't help but love the look of all of these cars/trucks. I have loved shiny paint for years but for whatever reason I like the look of pulling a car out of a barn or field and getting it on the road with some nice wheels and tires and calling it good. There are still nice shiny cars that make me go wow but I like a car that I think I could build or own. So when the magazines show these shiney bazillion dollar cars I cringe.

That is the plan Clark. I will start detailing the motor soon. I'll be posting the progress as I go.

I like my cars to be original as possible, and it can only be original once.
I have been into skulls, spider webs and iron crosses way before the whole rat rod fad came to the surface, hell I think every hot rod should have a Harley sticker on it.
to me a well built safe car with a little rust and alot of patina is badd ***, but then an all out show car is just as bad ***, I'm just not a show car guy, I love coming home from a road trip anwashing the bugs off my primer.
But for this thread ... If i was gonna do a ground up restoration,**** ya I would get rid of all the rust , put it on a rotisorri(no spell check) and build the nicest car I could.
But I have a feelin that I'm flat black and red wheels till death.

Right on! There is no paint that could ever improve it.

this is how i am doing it as well.
i do NOT want a dirty looking car.
i put too much time, money and effort into this to end up with something that looks like it just got pulled out of a field.

Am I the only one that checks out the parking lot and car corral before going to the show car field?

After the lot and corral, I usually only get halfway through the show car field before they all start looking the same. Don't have that problem in the car corral.

I would have loved to have kept my wagon with the original patina, but it had some serious rust in the rockers and above the head lights. It would have looked stupid though with the new rockers put it and everything sanded around it and then left like that. But, had it not been for the rust, it would have stayed the way it was.

Here is a before and after, except it has chrome rims now.

The original question was why would someone not strip a car to bare metal while it was in the process of being built, not why someone would intentionally leave a car with rust or patina once the car was done.

I for one cringe when I see rusty bodies, ch***is, axles and rear ends during the build of a car. Cleaning all the parts should be the first step inm a build in my opinion.

How else can you see what's solid with surface rust and what really needs to be replaced?

As DriveEm suggested, to the original question; I see no practical difference. It's merely a choice made by the builder depending on a state of mind.

Waiting for some rust to show up on the new rockers/headers/cowl repair/etc sheetmetal so the paint will stick is more practical on Nash hot rod. Why spend beer money on wash/etch when I can let mother nature to it for me?

Now that the fabrication is done, the prepping for paint can all be done in one operation. It's not practical in my opinion to screw around doing it a little bit at a time along the way. Prep for paint will require doors and hood to come off, etc, so any of that prior to now would have been a waste of time.

But that's not what the original post was about, was it????? It's about building, not paint.

I don't understand it either Larry. Rust is my enemy. I get rid of it any chance I get. And right off the bat if I can.

    That's just laughable.

Probably because you cannot understand why no one can understand a simple post and after 8 pages almost no one has contributed anything relevant to your original question.

It's simple people if you ARE GOING TO WORK ON THE BODY (panel replacement, chop top, etc) why would you do it with out removing the rust. Not should you drive a patinaed car or should you do mechanical work to get it on the road first or can you afford body work.

I agree Larry when you are going to work on the body it would make the most sense to me to remove all of the **** so you can work on it properly.

Look you made me yell as well:rolleyes::D.
