The last two times that I've used Rustoleum Gloss Black, the second coat has lifted. The first time I thought it was because I wiped the first coat down with wax & grease remover to remove some dust fallen on the brackets between coats.

This time, I painted four rims. Two I cleaned down to bare metal and two had good paint that I wiped down. I cleaned everything with wax and grease remover, hosed it off with an air gun, and then wiped with a tack cloth to remove any rag lint. The first coat layed beautifully.. glossy, no runs, no dust specks... perfect except that I missed a few spots. Every spot that I touched up with a second coat wrinkled within minutes. WTF? I've never had this problem before.

What's going on here? Any good way to remove wrinkled paint without getting the wire wheel back out?

    Thanks!

    Ed,

There is a time frame that you have to stay with in regarding re-coats.
Should be outlined on the can.

    AHotRod has it.
lay down a 2nd coat within about 8-15 min. it should still be "tacky" when you apply the 2nd, or 3rd coat.
    after that its too late.
also you dont want to apply more then 3 coats of Rustoleum.

    Hey,

Recoat lifted the first coat, bummer! Whats goin on here is the maker has ****ed with the formulation to keep the tree-huggin smog nazis happy.
The paint dries, on the surface, much faster than the product use to. A
dried surface means fewer fumes /VOCs (volatol organic compounds) =
Smog Kooties. The solvents in the new coat attack the partially cured,
first coat and lift it. Let this dry for a few days or take a heat gun to it,
and dry out the solvent. Lightly wipe with a thinner rag soaked with lacquer
to remove wrinkles. Dry it again with the heat gun, or give it a week ta flash.
Re coat, damn near wet on wet, unless it's cold as hell. Watch the first coat,
and when it flows from that orange peel look to colour-sanded black lacquer
nail it again. If ya go a third coat you'll be shoppin for trouble.
