Why Do They Call 'Em Freeze Plugs?

It doesn't freeze enough in SoCal

 

OK, try this.......have you ever put a plastic milk jug full of water in the freezer to make a block of ice? I have put them in full with the lid and the water will expand to ice pushing the lid off the milk jug - it doesn't split the milk jug. If you had a screw on lid, it would either pop the lid or split the carton.

I'm going with the theory that they're a necessity of the casting process, and that they got their nickname as a result of being pushed out by frozen water - not that they are designed to save the block.

But it sounds like we may never know!!!!

 

If a freeze plug pops out and saves a block from freezing in the woods in the middle of the night, and nobody is there to here it, did it really save it?

Thats about as deep as it gets!

 

If you lived in the frozen arctic that we like to call "Canada", you'd know why they are called Freeze Plugs.

I live there and I've never had a engine freeze up.

They sell this green stuff up here that can be put in the radiator water to keep it from freezing, works really well. If it's really bad they have this heater thingy that goes where the "freeze plug" is and keeps the engine warm in the winter.

I guess antifreeze isn't "oldskool"
