History Why does every Willys have to be a gasser or street rod?

I'm sure there are a few on the way,
along with a fleet of heavy 4 door barges,
    pretending to be "Gassers".

This car kicks a$$. It has a Hemi and 4 speed. The owner also owns the '32 Hiboy roadster behind it. Also a Hemi and 4 speed.

    I'm building a '38 Poncho 2dr C-dan gasser...because I can't afford a Willys....My dad is building a '36 Chebby 2dr C-dan gasser because he "doesn't like Willys:eek:"

I think the '49-'51 Merc gassers are abortions...their just wrong!...

That red Willys with the skirts is pretty sweet! Wonder how a 40-41 would look?

There was a reason Willys gassers were a little popular back in the day and I could have sworn it had to do with the class rules at the time and something to do with the Willys having a small weight advantage over similar body styles.

I'm sure the old timers here know better and with first hand knowledge - I had to rely on a book. I think it was called "Gasser Wars."

  13. Someone won't agree with me but the real reason is the same reason that all '53 Studes are drive lakes clones.
No imagination or those that do get stifled by those who think they are large and in charge.
If you want to see one, get out in the garage and build it. You don't have to see it in a book somewhere to build it, all you have to do is see it in your head.

  14. OK, that is just plain WRONG!!!

  15. Not if its winning. :D

You must be one of those guys that thinks he's large and in charge.

made me think of the hotwheel I used to have when I was a kid..
It would be cool to see someone do a '36 gasser just for the hell of it!

  17. I ain't in charge of shit. My opinion only matters to me, and I know that. You can build what ever you want, but I don't have to like it, and vise versa. I'm sure you wouldn't like my roadster because it is painted and has non HAMB friendly polished Torque Thrust wheels. But, it makes me happy, and if that jacked up Merc turns your crank, then it's all good. I thought it was OK to voice an opinion here. Am I wrong?

This one is bad ass, more of a hot rod to me. I have actually wornered the same about the Anglias, everyone usually has to pro street them with too wide of e tire in the back.

Im not pro streeting my anlgia, its not going to be a gasser either.

its going to be a chopped up, fenderless, channeled, sectioned anglia running a hopped up enfo 4 banger.

  20. I saw this one at Back To The 50's in MN this year.

WoW! Thats one big gasser, for sure. Being a witness to 50's drag racing, and more importantly the 60's gasser golden years, I'd have to say I've never seen Mercs that were gassers. Unless you were deliberatly going for a lower gas class, it wouldn't be considered. Most were customs, just as most Willys were race cars. Its all about power-to-weight. A smaller car is just going to be faster. A Willys was pretty small, but not as small as an Anglia or the Austins that were popular in the 60's. I do remember some early 50's Oldmobiles that ran in the lower gas classes, but they would never be able to compete with a smaller, more lightweight car.
Mercs make great customs and Willys are pure gasser...but there are a few Willys on this thread that are awfully good looking as cruisers.
Hey, whatever floats your boat :):):)

    Back to the Willys customs....
