Why doesn’t triple black work on a kustom??

I was thinking about Roller’s (3wLarry) Deuce the other day and was thinking
what would Larry do if he owned a kustom? My first impression was it would
have to be black and going through the wheel and tire set up, I have to run
white walls, right? Second thought, Why does it work on Hot Rods and not
Kustoms? I think it would give a kustom more of an evil/sinister look. Hot Rods
are built to have at***udes and look kool without white walls, why can’t it work
    with customs.

Yes I have to much free time on my hands…..

    What do ya think?

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I'm thinking you have too much free time...

A hot rod is supposed to look "bad"... ( A hot rod is for getting rid of girls"- somebody's quote).

A "kustom" needs to not be sinister looking...("A Kustom is for getting girls" -somebody's quote).

Blak on blak on blak does not show off the lines of a kustom and it's many modifications, girls can see how much work you've put into it, the body, paint and interior if it's painted a "cool" color ...and a hot rod is pure evil in a girl's eye...regardless of how much work went into it, they just don't see it...

    That help, Mick...???

I heard Robert Williams say it, and my buddy Shakey. Not sure who coined it, but it's funny.

I'm a custom guy all the way but that 3 window is bad***!

I agree with Roger, hot rods look sinister and tough while kustoms invite you in to take a closer look! .02

    Kool pic Alex.

I understand the girl thing and the traditions that run with the Kustoms and
Hot Rods. Black is such a kool color and my creative mind was wondering
    "what if....."

    Happy Trails,

I think it does work, if the said custom is a Cadillac! Almost every year Caddy looks better black (in my personal opinion), although if it's pre `60 it needs www's!

Roger nailed it, the lines of the car just aren't as prevalent on very dark colored cars. The above photos are a perfect example. WONDERFULLY awesome cars but they photograph terrible.

I cant find the pic but there was a triple black Cadillac that was at shows a few years ago, it was the satin one with the gloss flames....I'm sure someone has a pic. I liked the look of it.

Great example, that 38 changed my life.....Very kool!! But it has white walls.
If she is all black she might get lost in the black. But she would look bad.

Exactly. Also the same is true with the interior. In those pictures the only thing you can see in the white headliner of one. I will never have a black interior in a kustom, Kustoms need to pop.
Now all my daily drivers, those are all black/black.

what's the third black in triple black?

when I look at those D'Augustino customs with the "my little pony" paint jobs I always think they would look bad *** all black. not sure why people would think black won't work on customs.

in my mind the best looking customs are dark colors.

You guys build your cars for girls?

  20. Mick, is your question why don't blackwall tires work on a black/black custom?

If you hang out on here, then wide whites are the overwhelming choice because this site is very traditional. This site is really kind of amazing, because even though I knew a little about customs (enough that I went and bought a '51 Merc my dream car), the folks on here know so much about customs and hot rods that it blows your mind. I love it!

To answer your question my way, if you want to run black ways your car will look a little meaner.

My myself and going for the look I refer to in conversations as "elegant gangster." :)

    WHA!?!?
Some of the best customs are very sinister.........remember, girls dig badboys...:D
And black shows off bodylines better IMO, as they have to be perfect.....especially under low light...
Nothing looks more evil than a black custom cruising the "strip" under the street lights at night. Nothing.....

    Dear John,

I've hung out on here for a while...........

One of the kool things about Kustoms, everything hadn't been done. I was reading
one of the old "Restyle" magazines and they we encouraging guys to try something
new instead of following everybody else. It is a lot easier but if you’re into Kustoms
it is a lot more fun to think outside of the box. A traditional Kustom doesn't mean that
they all have to look a like.....

This is one of the reasons for the post.... Get kustoms guys to be creative.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

My he**** is being built as a custom and it will be at least Black on Black. Leaning towards Oxblood for the interior.

Calori's coupe, bad*** as it is, ran a red/white interior. I LOVE black cars! I think the Calori coupe would look just as good w/ a black leather gut!

Black cars with PERFECT bodywork are my favorites, they just look best in person not in photos.

The reason for the discussion; I'm going to have to buy new whites for the Merc
and it might be time for a change. I have this kool idea running the Merc with black
walls & 17" black wheels with a small center cap. I think it would give it a new
traditional style. They're was a 4 dr Packard in Street Rodder magazine that looks
real bad that way. Why wouldn't it work on my Merc...

The reason for me questioning it, you don't see too many kool Mercs with
out running white walls.. Their might be a reason for that....ha, ha, ha..

One that came to mind was Cadzilla. Even though its not black it gives you an idea
what I'm looking at..Would it look better with wide white walls and Sombreros? Hhumm.

Triple black only applies to convertibles. Black body, black interior and black top. If it's not a convertible it's not triple black. Coupes and sedans can't be triple black.
