Down here in Arkansas, I have a 46 PU. Have just had it a few months. It was nonrunning when I bought it; now the 8BA flattie purrs like a kitten. Doing some brake work on it, and need to install the windshield and it will be on the road. Don't have any pics yet, but will try to get some posted.

  3. Could be cuz there not very pretty. Especially when you see what Ford came out with before and after.

Why not?? Well my guess is that most people favor the '40's better and are likely to swap the front sheet metal over.

The other reason is (another guess) is that there just weren't alot of them made??? (I dunno the actual production numbers)

With all that said I have a '47 that was built as a hot rod around '65 with a 392 Hemi. I have made every effort to keep it looking the same - while upgrading to disc brakes, dual reservoir master, adding functional turn signals, seat belts, hazzards, hitch - just minor stuff. FWIW you couldn't get me to change the front sheetmetal for love nor money!

  7. I have a 46 Ford PU.. Yes they are ugly. I have been told a few times that 40 front fenders, hood, etc fit. Yes? No?

I am going a different way with it anyhow. I doubt I'll be using much sheetmetal from 40 or 46, maybe not Ford at all...

IMO I think they look better with that "fugly" sheetmetal. They dont have anything on Zephyr's and the old luxury cars, but they still have style.

40-41 Cabs and 42-47 cabs are not identical. Here's a pic of a 40. Notice the shape of the cab where the back of the front fender fits.

Then look at this 46. The 40 is a more gentle curve; the 46 is more abrupt.

I always liked them. A freind of mine had a nice one. It was painted light yellow, lowered, and a bad ass odsmobile motor in it. To me a great sounding motor overcomes ugly real quick. So I say go for it. Have fun with it, be unique, isn't that kinda what we do be a little different than everybody else.

I've got one, a '46. I think they are quite lacking in the style department, but I got it cheap, almost free, and I am going to do something with it. All of the ugly stuff was wasted, so all I am left with is the cab, frame and bed sides.
Trans is good though. and the flathead is complete....completely rusted solid. Thank goodness I got four more with it.

  19. Being different is cool. That's why I'm bulding a 55 Plymouth instead of a Chev. Around these parts, a Plymouth ranks with hens teeth.

I'm with you Neal - I like them - then again I am biased.

Here's a couple pics of mine - it's raining today or I would have taken some better ones.

Some guys get an old car (truck) and can't wait to "make it theirs" (which is great fun - don't get me wrong), but for this one of mine I made every effort to make it appear that I DIDN'T change anything. Even little stuff that is a normally a pet peeve of mine like radiator hoses - every car of "mine" I dig through the parts store until I find a molded hose that appears "stock" on my motor - but not here - I purposefully replaced the upper hose with the one I normally despise -cause THAT's what it had before. This truck has a personality (to me) that I want to try preserve not change. It pains me have to change the rear axle - but it's a matter of time. With that said I have made upgrades - like functional turn signals - it was alot of effort to make the old unit work - but worth every minute to me.

How about that 70's (?) vintage bumper sticker - "installed" by the origional builder way back when.
Notice under the hood the extreme lack of frills - no chrome valve covers, wheels or aftermarket shifters. Nope just the bare basics. This was before HEMI's were expensive too. The origional builder told me he LITERALLY built this with money "out of the change jar" - things were definitely cheaper then!!!

HemiRambler, I agree. The 46 I've had for several months is not going to get anything except what it needs to make it safe on the road. It looks like an old farmer's truck and it will continue to look like that.

I looked at a red 47. It was 327 powered with 3 speed floor shift. I liked the way it drove but the builder removed the stock grill and welded in a big home made heart shaped grill. It was AWFULL! Passed on it.

  27. personally i think they are FUGLY ,BUT unique enough to make a stand out rod, sure won't see many of em at a run ;D

One cool thing about the '46-'47 trucks is the old myth that Ford put their surplus of WWII military spec engines into them (engines with X, Y, or Z in the numbering). Is it true? Is the military block really stronger than civilain? Maybe it's just an urban legend, but that's what they used to say.

UGLY, you bet! But I'd like few more like the one I got for $100.00 plus the $100.00 rollback delivery. That was cheap, one locked brake drum, out in a soft field. They are great parts doners, and the leftover pile of scrap fit inside my E-350 van and netted me $37.00. Still have two doors without the bottom 4-6 inches. :)

There are a lot of 1942 -47 out there that are running 1940 front sheet metal. I had a few I sold and just about everyone that bought them told me that they were good to get rid of the front sheet metal and use 1940 front sheet metal.
