I hate it when d'heads give you advice about your car... You ought to sell it? I tell em you ought to dump that fat arse bitch your married too and get a car........
I figure there are two kinds of people, builders and drivers, I'm a builder. I much perfer to put together a new project than drive em. When I get a new project I do the mechanicals first and get it reliable enough to drive anywhere. By the time I'm ready to do the body and interior somebody will want to buy it from me while I'm going somewhere. Drivers on the other hand get a new car and spend a lot of money on new paint and tires. The car looks fantastic but it's usually found broke down by the side of the road.
If you sold it you couldn't come on here and start another lame thread that's already been covered a few dozen times and allow a few dozen folks (like myself) to reply and end up not adding anything to the advancement of "traditional rods and customs". I'll bet $5 not a week goes by until the subject (or similar) comes up again. If I win I don't take paypal, only cash or M.O.. If you win I'll let you name your payment method. Any takers? Frank
I keep cars longer than a lot of people keep wives. I've had the '38 Ford pickup since I was 14 (1966) and the '55 Ford that my parents bought new since I was 16 (1968). Oldest grandson (now 10) has staked his claim on the truck, told him he has to wait until Paw Paw is dead or at least too old to drive any more. Oldest daughter has staked her claim on the '55. Same answer for her, when I'm dead or at least too old to drive.
Love the ones that after you have had it for sale for a year for 7500. tell you "man I would have gave you 10 for that" Where the hell you been for the last year?
I can't even remember when someone's advised me to sell anything... maybe my mom when I was running a nitroused OT drag car on the street (she hated it...). However, I sold off everything to be near my fiancee with only one request, I wanted to build the hotrod of my dreams. My family digs it, she digs it, and any one else whom looks at me cock-eyed trying to figure out why I don't just go out and buy an Escalade I just respond politely and go about my own way.
Build what you want to start with, then there will never be any question about selling. Sell it? Hell no, I'll sell the '03 family van first and the 'rod will then become the daily driver! If she won't ride in it, that's my gain, she can catch the bus.
I sold several cars along the way that I did not want to sell. I had to pay for things like my kids education and a roof over our heads. Somehow I've managed to hang on to the last one I built for many years, so now it is part of the family. I just keep on trying to keep it from deteriorating faster than I can improve it. At least that's the plan. Sure, the outlaws always have something to say about my funny looking old car, but when they start up, I start IT up and down the road I go.
No, I dont have any friends or family (at least those that I still associate with) that arent into cars. Non car people arent worth my time/energy.
Don't have that problem. Of course not having many friends and being the black sheep in the family doesn't hurt a thing.
The only people that tell me to sell it are those that dont get it, arent into cars to begin with and those that want to buy it. I must admit for me the best part is having a vision on what I want to build and building it. The bummer is that I wind up having to sell one to finance building the next one. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Its different for everyone, just like our rides. At some point, the cars can own you. I admit, I'll never sell my first pickup truck. Too many wild times with it. -It won't pass a filling station. It ain't rare. It isn't a looker (except through my eyes). It is really loud. It smells. It is a bitch to steer. It doesn't stop well. To anyone else, the thing needs a total redo, but, it is all mine. We fell in love when I was just 12. I'm 40 this year, so I guess we're family now..
When I had my 66 Hertz Shelby I got that a lot. "Do you know what those are worth?" Yes, but I'd rather drive the car and enjoy it. Can't do that with a pile of money. The value of a special vehicle doesn't enter in to it for me. If it's worth a lot fine, but that's not my prime reason for buying it or to sell it to make a buck. And yes, I think cars do have a kind of mechanical soul. People are all different and have different priorities. I remember being at the Renissance Festival here in Minn one year. There was an air show the same weekend at a close by airport. A B-17 kept flying over. Low passses. It was magnificent. They were probably giving rides. I heard the beautiful song of those radial engines before I saw the plane so I was already looking. What an inspiring sight. Makes my heart beat faster. The sound, sight, what a B-17 represents. Almost no one else even noticed. Not even to look up. Idiots! How could that not get your attention. Just like our cars. It's "just" an airplane. That's peeple for ya.
