    air filter = 10 hp
    exhaust = 12 hp
    hi-po ignition = 6 hp
    chip = 10 hp

    If you think those will net you 40 hp, you need to stop running your motor with the garage door closed.

    Pull motor. Cam, headwork, intake, exhaust, _tune_ and you get 150 hp and a TON of area under the curve. Anything less ain't worth the time spent to get it.

    I drive my wife's stock 35 pick up and it's cool but going 45 mph quietly just gets old.Now when I drive my blown flattie it's a frickin rush. The heart starts pounding just starting it up especially with open exhaust.Just ask my kids.If I give them a choice of which one they want to ride in they pick the blown flattie everytime.They get it.

  6. Hey! Twobit is all right! We gave him **** and he stood up for himself, instead of running away crying. That makes him OK in my book.

    becaues 130 is a hell of a lot more fun in a model a with 600 HP 429 ford than in a Porsche 911 turbo

    I think the guy sorta said...why would you pull the four banger, and instead of sliding in a stock V8 of some sort (cleaned up abit, i guess) just build some 600 horsepower beast to cram in there...because your going to go a helluva lot faster either way.

    I guess its about money, and streetability.

    Yes, if you swap out your 4 banger with say a stock SBC, you'll have plenty of power. But after about a week (or less, if you're a hotrodder) you'll get used to the extra power and start the vicious cycle with...
    -If I added headers this would sound better, run better and get better MPG and have more power.
    -The next week...If I changed the intake and carbs this would sound better, run better and get better MPG and have more power.
    -The following week...If I changed the cam this would sound better, run better and get better MPG and have more power.

    You can never have too much power, thats why its called hotrodding.
    Get it? If not then just go away.

    What are the other 33 reasons??

    First of all, you gotta respect history. While custom guys put looks ahead of speed, hot rodders were all about performance. I think it was Robert Williams that said customs were for getting chicks, and hot rod were for getting rid of them. When our fore fathers set us on the path to the hot rod promise land, they're purpose was to go fast. As time marched on, and technology grew, a time came when it was easier and cheaper to slap in a new motor than try to squeeze an extra 40 hp outta their flathead. But did they stop there, no. By nature, hod rod guys are tinker's. They couldn't leave well enough alone. Guys like vic edelbrock, smokey yunik, Caroll Shelby, Don Gartlis, these were guys with a need for speed and a mind that could "see" the possilities. Like an artist, they had ideas they had to create, things they had to work out. Just like every walk of life, there are those who have to keep raising the bar, upping the ante. These pioneers have not only influenced hot rodding, but the aftermarket, the OEM's, and of course, racing. Take an early track roadster and tell me you can't see how it evolved into outlaw racing. Take a T-bucket and slide the body back, you got the beginnings of dragsters. In 1954, take your moonshine runner and strap in a roll bar, and your ready to go NASCAR. Rip off the fenders on you early rod, and lets go to the salt lakes. You see, the need for speed is undeniably linked to hot rodding. Now that a crate motor better than quadruples the hp of your rods original engine, and making it faster is more dependent on how much jingle is in your pocket than gr***roots innovation, it all really depends on what you want and what you can afford. But asking why someone would strap a beast of an engine in their rod is like asking why the sky is blue. We all build our cars to OUR tastes. If you don't, your more than likely a wanna be jumping on the lastest craze in an pathetic quest to be cool. I'm not saying that's the case with you, but there certainly is no shortage of people who fall in this category. If a stock V8 gets you were you wanna be, then great. If you gotta go faster, god bless. If you can afford to go real fast, just promise to take me for a ride. Do what you like and let everybody else do the same, but like our 2 wheel brothers have always said, if I gotta explain, you wouldn't understand.

    To those few who actually thought about the question and their answer - thank you for making this an interesting thread. To the rest of you retards, either you don't read, think or write well. I say to you,"Go back and re-read and study, if necessary, the original question and try again with some intelligence".

    This site has a reputation for helping others and discussing valid subjects, but there are always the few who want to spout off and try to show their creative side by adding absolutley nothing to the discussion except the exposure of their ignorance and unwillingness to consider a legitimate question.

    I am still looking for about 18 of "the 35 reasons".

    Regards, Twobit

    Seriously, this is the answer. If you do not get that, I don't understand you, and a lot of other folks probably don't either.

    Hot rodding = enjoying messing with ****. Pretty simple.

    Why? Because we're addicts and speed is our drug of choice. Now, a stock V8 motor will move you quicker than a stock Model A motor. That's simple physics, but it won't be too long before that rush gets old. So, ya begin to play with the guts of the V8. More horsepower means MORE fun/rush.

    Feed your head, man!

    A little known fact: fumes from half-burned high octane gasoline and rubber smoke are the main cons***uents of testosterone.

    Thats what hot rods are, they started building them to go faster then the other guy. 1. fast is fun 2. bragging rights. 3. the fun of compe***ion 4. the chicks like the guys with the fast cars. There are plenty more reasons but thats what I got of the top of my head. If you want to leave the engine closer to stock, then build a custom, low and slow baby.

    adjustablejohnsons, SlamCouver, Chickencoupe, Brandy, Bort62, Frosty21 and tomcat46, understood the question; the rest of you should go back and edit your useless replies and see if you can impress us with an intelligent reply.

    Ah, Twobit, dont worry about all us retards on the board. Good for you - you kicked back when you got booted in the nuts. Shows you got a little style.

    Most of the guys are just funnin' you. Dont take it to seriously. Nobody really gives a **** anyhow (unless you are going to make it a rat rod). With that said, my answer is: Is there any better way to screw up a perfectly good old car?

    Eh, we all understood the question. Stop being all hurt just because we not only understood it, but understood it to be gay.

    If "because you can" doesn't sit well with you, you're in the wrong ****ing place, that simple. Nobody is saying you HAVE to run a built powerplant, but having to ask why a lot of us prefer to is pretty ****ing dumb.

    Twobit, ever been in a hot rod that can pin you back hard in the seat and make you grin? That's what a bigger modern motor can do in a light Model A.

    Now, have you ever been in a hot rod that can light the tires up when you stab the pedal at 60 MPH, hang out sideways at that speed with smoke pouring from the rear tires, little kids and old ladies ******* in their pants when they hear the rumble and roar, your balls up in your throat because you're on the edge of controlling a monster, and a smile across your face so wide that your damn chin collapses? That's what a hopped up bigger modern motor can do in a light Model A.

    I have no more to say.........
