I call it "trickle down effect".. Its like one of them ant mounds built from champagne glasses, every one trickles into a bunch of others....Very nice Avanti, vibrant color...

  3. One of my Top 5 Cars of all time........I was hitchiking home from High School in 1964 and a guy with a new one decided to show me mercy and give me a lift. I was "stupified" for three days after.......Amazing , Amazing car! Centurion9

Thanks, it took a long time to decide on the color. I wanted a period color so after looking at color charts for many weeks, I chose Marina Blue from a `65-`67 Corvette.

A very good looking Avanti. You have done a wonderful job. I have two spittoons both Studebakers. They're never finished, but I love 'em.

Well, I pulled all of the upholstery out and started to make new panels. I`ve never done this before but we just bought a new industrial sewing machine and I`m not going to learn how to do this unless I try.

I bought some vinyl material and some board and using the old pieces for patterns, I cut out the new pieces with a utility knife and our metal shear.
    DSC03843.JPG
Covering them wasn`t too hard, I first glued 1/8" foam to the board and stretched the vinyl over the edges and stapled it using 1/4" staples.
Here`s a picture of the other side.
    036.JPG
The bottom part of the panel originally had pleats. When I first made the panel I thought I would just leave the bottom plain but after seeing how it would look next to the door panel, I decided to add the pleats. I removed the chrome strips and Steve sewed through the fabric and the board. That`s one strong sewing machine.

And here`s what it looks like in the car.

I made the other panels the same way, but they were easier because except for the door panels, they were all flat.
I bought a new set of carpets because they about as cheap already made as the carpet was by the yard.

Now I know that I don`t have the skills yet to make the seat covers so I ordered a new set . I haven`t started on the door panels yet, but maybe I`ll have time next week.

Here are some recent pictures. After two years and more money than I want my wife to know about, I`m almost finished with this car. I`ve added A/C which was a pain in the ass, but well worth the trouble. Everything is new or rebuilt now so it`s time to drive and enjoy it. Beautiful car. I'm no avanti fan or expert, is that a blower?
Avanti means forward, in the sence of going or get up and go?

It look like a million bucks!!
    Its so odd, its beautiful.

And I dont agree on the; good for a first time comment. Its good for anytime around!

Yes, it has a supercharger,it came like that from the factory. Supercharges were installed on some Studebakers starting in 1957 and up until they went out of business.

I just couldn`t live with those wheel covers, so I had to change to these wheels. Real knock offs . DSC04135.JPG DSC04045.JPG

Super-nice job! The knock-offs look fantastic. Didn't the factory offer them, or are these re-pops / modern versions? Gary

The dealers offered something similar, but I bought these from Vintage Wheels in San Diego.

Well done! And with great taste. Your color and wheel choice are spot on.

  24. Great job, really like the instrument panel and of course the wheels. Always liked these cars, thought they had beautiful lines, back in the day.

  25. I know the snow ball effect only to well! My model A is like a high maintenance woman and craves constant attention. And she winds up getting it! LOL .:D The avanti is fantastic sir! One of the best I have seen. Congrats , what a sweet ride!

  27. Beautiful car. A miracle that the engine didn't sling a rod with that oil pressure problem.

  28. I've always been a fan of Avanti's..after seeing yours I'm sure there will be more fans.
    Well done, beautiful.

  29. Beautiful Stude- Seems like Avantis are addictive. The couple people I know that have one, have three.
Did those engines get used in hot rods when they were newish much? I'm sure they must've, but I haven't seen them. With or without the supercharger and a four speed would look pretty skookum in my A sedan..
