Why isn't anyone running the newer styled 5 speeds behind a SBC? Are they longer than the 4 speeds? I would love to build a 327-5 speed car in the future. Just wondering why they only end up behind 235's and flatties?

might not hold up very long.i heard the gm t-5s weren't real strong.but hell i dont see why not...doesnt hotwheels run one behind a hemi?

  3. I got one behind a 283 in my wagon. I believe it to be a torque issue. GM only put them behind the 305 and not the 350. I had to cut the driveshaft about 3 inches and order a special clutch disc other than that a piece of cake.

    I've got a T5 in my Roadster.
The SBC is only a 283, but it is blown...
I guess the reason it still lives is my smooth application of the throttle and the way I carefully select gears.

    YEAH,RIGHT!!

Guys have been running early ford 3 speeds behind damn near every v-8 that could end up in a hotrod, and they arent exactly known for thier brute strength I guess...So a newer 5 speed shouldnt be out of the question...?

  7. I have one['96] that I was planning on putting in my 31 Roadster behind the 409-but My last RPU was a 4 speed and my '58 is a stick..IM JUS TIRED OF SHIFTING- I guess [IMG].
I'm gonna put an automatic in mine this time.......

  8. Kenny, I might be interested in the 5 spd.

When I worked at Bruce's Rod Shop, we were putting T-5's in all the standard trans cars. Danny, HOTRODPRO, has one in his hugger orange '32 highboy behind a 2x4 350 with the GM hot cam in it. He has around 60,000 miles on the car, flogs the hell out of it, and hasn't*****tered the trans. We also had a couple of T-5's running behind the ZZ430 crate engines. The trans you want is the World Class T-5, V8 Camaro or Firebird trans. They are stronger than the V6 and S-10 transmissions. To get the shifter more to the front, we had S-10 tails put on V8 boxes, that keeps the shifter out of your seat.

They didn't put the 5 speed behind the newer body style Camaro? I thought the 305 went away a long time ago?

Those whale bodied camaros with the T-5's were between 3600 and 4000 pound cars. Trying to launch that much mass with a torque motor is tough on the little gears in a T-5 but you guys are using them in light hot rods. Your tires are gonna spin before the T-5 gives up.
When my kid was in high school, one of his buddy's usta bring him home in a 87-88 camaro with a 305 and a T-5. That kid usta TORTURE that car with 5 grand clutch sidesteps and powershifts etc etc....I always thought the T-5 was gonna exit the bottom of the car one day but it was the clutch that blew up...several times.******* lived .........

  12. i hate to say it, but maybe you ought to pick up a copy of street rodder magazine every now and then. every manual trans car in it has a late model 5-speed.

I just think hotrods need 3 pedals......It's probably not as efficient ,but man nothing feels better than slamming gears out on a country back road...... [IMG]

What about the 6 speeds? They look really big and bulky compared to the 5's.

  17. A pal just mated a 6 speed to a Rambler Bellhousing. They are A LOT bigger than the t5s!Sure are cool though.

  18. I don't think the six speeds are really needed in a hot rod. If your runnin the 5 speed, that should scare you enough. I personally am running the 5 speed behind my hemi with a quick change. That should be enough.......

you could probably go thru a dozen t-5's before you equal the cost of a 6 speed. hell, i KNOW you could, i can get them for about $70, non W/C. in the junkyard, i got a couple of extras for my non running car!

And then you'd also have to***** with hooking up the hydrualic clutch when going to a 6 speed. As mntioned before, the World Class T5's are pretty stout, but if you wanna torture and mame one without hurting it, get a Tremec. A buddy of mine that's into Mustangs ran a Tremec behind a stroked 302 with a BIG blower making around 700 horses to the wheels, running low 10's, high 9's in the quarter. That's*****ing moving !! I asked this question on another post...

Other than the s-10 bellhousing what bellhousing and clutch is needed to mate the T-5 to a earlier samll block?

Rodney, I thought Danny switched from a weaker T5 to a Camaro T5 after he broke the chassis - about 1 year after the roadster was on the road. I remember that he had some issue with the Camaro "twisted*******". Maybe he just swapped tailhousings and shifters at that time... FWIW, Danny tied with Jard for top street car time at the Kontinentals Day of the Drags.

Anyway, the published torque values for the heavy duty versions of the T5 weigh in about 300 foot pounds. That's the published version. The reality is that they WILL take more torque in as built condition, and with a careful rebuild by someone that knows how to hop up transmissions, they can take much more. From my experience, unless you have a boat, have a LOT ot torque, have a lot of rubber, AND drop the hammer over and over, you probally won't have any problems. With the hard and narrow tires most of us run I can't imagine breaking a T5 unless it was worn out.

    I've got 2 S10 4 banger T5's.
They seem to be a clunky shifting******* compared to the Camaro versions.
