I love tunnel rams on cars that run strong. but '80 pro street shit that can only make enough power to get the car on a trailor suck! If it aint fast, whats the point.
I said a tunnel ram would look stupid on the Graffiti coupe and I meant IT WOULD LOOK STUPID ON THE GRAFFITI COUPE!!!!-- NOT Falfa's '55 I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. I was just trying to state as an example a "traditional hot rod" from an earlier time period that most people can relate to. I also know that Falfa's '55 and the Two-Lane Black Top car are the EXACT SAME CAR, but even when you talk those 2 cars the tunnel ram only would be correct on one of those cars (that's whe you NEVER see the actual big-block in that car in the movie).
I've owned 2, and loved both. One was a 2X4 set-up. The other a single carb. The single carb was a 750 on top of a L-88, and a comp RV 292 cam. The thing ran like a scalded ass ape threw the whole range, ran great on the highway, and pulled a trailer like a bull. And would start in a foot of snow. But most of all it took me into the 12's in a all steel 56 Chevy P/U. Being the only change from a performer intake that turned mid 13s. I might add, this was a Wieand D. I put 130,000 miles on that truck.
John's Mom had the better car of the two. Mrs. Milner used to take John out to Paradise Road and give him a good whoopin' when he was bad......
The secret to running a tunnel ram on the street is use small carbs. These are 450 Holleys I ran in the 80's. I wouldn't run one on a traditional rod, they're from the wrong era.
True, but I'm a believer the small block Chev is from "the wrong era" for a traditional hot rod too...??? Milner's car shoulda had a flattie IMO. If a 50's V8 had to be used I woulda gone with a Nailhead or Caddy V8...?
Make for a piss weak movie... "I'm Milner and this is the slowest car in the car in the Valley". The End. Danny
Wow, double pic post, don't even know how I did that. Anyway....I understand that we all got bored with SB Chevys in the 80's but you are mistaken if you think they aren't traditional. Check out any mag' from 55 on and you'll see plenty of SBC powered hot rods. But that's another subject altogether.
is it that time of month for this thread???? i like them on gassers!!! wow, i didnt have to bitch or run peoples opinions down!!!!
I've done this mod. Usually a 1/8th hole in each primary plate does the trick. You can also flip the carb upside down and adjust the secondary throttle plate position. There is a set screw.
She said that to Falfa about his '55. And the movie was set in '62. He would've had a tough time being the king of street racing with a flathead in '62. Even Lauie's Edsel would've been making somewhere around twice the horsepower! Oh, and Breeder, screw you.
Again... more power, more torque throughout the RPM range... and on the right car they look BITCHEN! They got a bad rap in the early 90's when guys started bragging "It runs 10's on street tires, through the mufflers and with a "flat hood"... or "it has a single carb"... Sam.
Go back to Moparts. (j/k) AG was set in 1962. SBC's were all over the place by then. I have to admit, though....It would have really been cool though if he had a punched and stroked big inch Olds.
Maybe you should do some research,SBC debuted in 1955 & due to thinwall casting(light weight) alot of hot rods immediately switched from everything else.Maybe i should put my old man on here,he was there!!!!
Well i got a tunnel Ram on my lil a truck and let me tell you what its the weirdest preforming thang in the world if i slip it down into 1st and just nail it it will fry the cheater slick clean off of it all the way thru the gears but you try that from a light in drive and it will only spin em a few feet the buckle up and boys you had better be holdin on cause that lil sbc has gone to work it runs around town nicely gets descent gas milage but when you slide them two 4s open and wanna play you better be ready for a ride and unless they were just talking to hear them selves talk the boys from kiken were all over my lil truck at the rv park in Boerne this past year and they supposably loved it ( Dewayne Smith San Antonio Tx Outlaws Rod & Kustom Primer black lil a pickup with wide whites cheater slicks torque thrust big ass shop logo in a iron cross on doors ) Check Out The Website Guys Let Me Know What You Think WWW.SAOUTLAWSRODANDKUSTOM.COM
I use an ancient offy piece with two 750 afb's and it works great. Moroso tomorrow night for test n' tune.
I agree. I've had (2) 454's with tunnel rams, had (5) 440's with them too... No big issues. Had a cross rams on 454's & 440's too... I actually think they are worse. I have a 440 STR cross ram that is worth a good buck... stinks on the car.
I ran a tunnel ram on a 350/350 with 2 390 Holleys on a car I built in the 80s.With a Doug Nash 5 speed and 323 gears I got 19 MPG on the way to the Indianapolis Street Machine Nationals. It had good torque and also would RPM nice.It also would stall every time you came to a stop if it was much below 40 degrees out,due to the carbs icing up[yes they stuck out of the hood].I haven't run one since but I do have one put away for when I get to my Anglia project[right now about 4th on the list but keeps getting moved back!]And yes,I will be running 390 Holleys.
Since the big plenum is the problem for street driven tunnel rams, why not cut the plenum volume down so as to gain a stronger vacuum signal? You'd still want to run reasonable sized carbs, but some kind of triangular shaped sheet metal divider inside the plenum would have the effect of lowering plenum volume. Far as cold starting goes, a choke/chokes work wonders. I ran a medium riser dual quad on my built 462" Buick and had both chokes to a pair of 500 cfm Carters hooked up. Only other change was lighter metering rods due to the low vacuum levels with the big cam. The car started like right now and idled just fine. No probs when driving off cold. Straight linkage as well, the car drove as easy as any single four barrel car. Idled all day at 600 rpm. I see no reason why a tunnel with smaller plenum couldn't do the same....
Build one... No, I haven't run it yet..but I am confident it will work. Yes, the net volume of the plenum is actually less than percieved. Yes, the runners are at the same level as the base of the plenum. No, I don't worry about having to tune it or jet it or fiddle with it to make it work, 'cause thats the fun part.
people who cannot tune them hate them....personally the are an awesome setup....have ren several of them from a 283ci to a 557ci Brodix and tuned correctly they all worked fine. Street driven one for almost 14years on a 357ci in a 55 chevy truck...ran a best of 11.17@121.68mph and got 14mpg on trips, and the best part was it was all hidden under the hood!!! Just remember...it is your car...not evrone will like it no matter what it is or what you do to it....so just make it your way!!!
Edelbrock & Offenhauser instroduced theirs in mid 1969 but for the most part were probably not available to the public until 1970. TR's really took off on the street in 1973-1974. I hate it when I see a 50's style rat rod running a tunnel ram.
