Why O why must people lean on the paintjob?

I have to agree it is a respect thing more than anything else. I am showing respect by keeping my hands to myself, and expect the same.

I have never had a car with a nice paint job, but am on my way. Paint and body work are totally foreign to me, and I mess it up no matter how hard I try. Because of that, I have to pay someone to do that for me. The people who show the lack of respect are the same ones who will walk away when they realize they damaged your car. Who has to pay to get it fixed? This idiot has likely not stuck around to apologize and offer to fix it, he has wandered off with his head just as far up his ass!

had a 34 ford every one would tap on it with their knuckles to see if was fiberglass. I had a sign made with "its steel"............................................................................... What is worse is if you leave something parked and some dumb ass has raised the hood to see the mill.............................This happened on several F100 's that I have owned with big cams................ I stuck a pistol in a guys face and accused him of trying to steal my truck........................ He almost wet his self. I bet he has never done that again. ................. Next on my buy list is several T model coils. Thanks for the sugestion.

Not that I've put too much time into thinking about it, but I reckon it's mostly a subconscious thing sorta like a dog marking its territory or a guy putting his arm around his girl when there are other alpha males nearby.
Is it possibly because the no-brain dude is feeling less confident in the presence of something he admires but doesn't really understand or knows he cannot do himself and he wants to 'associate' himself with the coolness by touching it intimately using his hands or his body.(?) It helps him regain his self-esteem.
Basically he's hiding his feelings of inadequacy.
Because it's not a concious thing to try to piss the owner/builder off, they get all indignant when they're asked, however politely, to get the fuck off.
Of course, I could be wrong and they're really just arseholes.

As mentioned,to 95 percent of people, cars are a machine. Like a washing machine for transportation. And I know women who keep their washing machine clean and shiny but might lean on your car. Now if it's a attractive lady with her ass on your car you might be diplomatic about it it.But usually it's a slob guy with pizza fingers...
A well finished car is like a fine painting....hang it on the wall or take it out in public and suffer anxiety from the touching and leaning Zombies.

At the risk here of being tongue-lashed , I caught myself leaning on a car once at a local car show. Now , based on what I've said , some here would form an immediate opinion of me as an asshole, someone who doesn't respect other people's property , but they would be wrong. I absolutely respect the property of others. Except for that one time, I can say that I never touch the cars at shows. However, for some reason that one time, my mind was somewhere else. So we all make mistakes.....next time it could be you.

  7. I just read the whole thread..........plenty of stories , advice, attitudes, humor, and some bullshit too, basically it all comes down to respect , that which many were never taught , our country is riddled with it , its happening everywhere . The original poster was referring to his buddies with the leanto attitude.....I think I would set up a few chairs in the garage facing the car, put up a sign "Bullshit Area Here", build a railing between the car and hang out area, then keep the beer and snacks on the chair side:D, the big screen? well you might have to test that out , see where it works best keeping their attention away from the car. As for car events and shows, it is going to happen, it is human behavior. I like the voltage idea, but I would venture to say if you electrified the car and put a sign saying so.......they would still touch it ;). Myself, I do not touch anyone's property, no matter what it is and I keep myself in shape enough to not have to park my ass where it does not belong. :)

Shinysideup, I feel your pain.... It's like a nice paint job or a classic car is a magnet to people wanting to touch it.
The same thing happens at the Drag Strip... I took my Nostalgia Funny Car to our local track for some testing, While we were in the pits with the body up a few guys I know came up to talk and one of them must of felt he had to prop his foot up on the front tire, like a traffic cop giving me a ticket, It didn't really bother me at first but while I was standing there talking to them one of them put his foot on my chrome axle.

Kind of like a dog that goes around pissing on everything to lay claim.

I guess if I had a expensive or labored paint job I would be concerned. But I don't. Although the guys that have to show their buddies that it is real America steel by rapping on panels gets a little old after a while. But it's just the way it is.

Most guys I've met from the Springfield area would have followed with one more foot---- up someone's ass !:D

Saxon, one of the worse places ever to go to a car show is Old Town Kissimmee. Most people wandering around at the cruises have just left some Mickey Mouse place where they felt everything they could get their grubby little hands on.

I don't think I've ever taken my 56 Chevy Bel Air 2 door post to a car show where some Bubba didn't show his 300# Bubbette how much he knew about cars by dropping the left tail light to show her where you put the gas in. That tail light housing needed some type of electrical shocking device.

  13. Well I don't recall ever actually leaning on someone's show car. I have set on plenty of tires and bumpers. But I never just walk up and take a sit. more often then not someone will tell me to sit down if they know me.

I did drop a wrench on a friends brandy new black cherry painted fender once. Knocked a little chip out of it. Man I felt like an idgot. He laughed it of and said he didn't have to worry about it getting chipped any more. They say that the first chip or scratch is the most devastating. He then walked over to a cabinet and got this little crayon looking thing out and rubbed it in the chip. he said after an hour or so he would be able to wax right over it.

worst thing are the people who bring their dogs to car shows and let them get really close to the cars most of the time jumping up on the paint and scratching the living daylights out of the doors.

I was outside the parts store and a couple guys came up to chat. Seemed like cool guys and they said they had some nice OT cars. Well, I was wanting to get my valve covers polished and one guy said he does it. I was just about to give the guy some business, when he goes to set his foot on my chrome tierod. I caught him, stopped him and said I wasn't interested in getting my covers done. If he couldn't respect my property, with me standing there, how was he going to it at his place?

Good parenting. During the "terrible two's", that's when mom and dad those the "Keep your hands to yourself." card. It either sinks in or it doesn't. I got a few ass whippin's, but I caught on.

  17. I actually had a dog that I could take to car shows once, he was well behaved. On the otherhand I also had a broad that I couldn't take to a dog fight once as well. ;)

Dogs and people are a lot alike with a little upbringing they are both OK to be around.

Dunno if he's still around, but there used to be a well-known a$$hat that showed up at all the swap meets anywhere around Sacramento, about six foot, red pony tail, and always blue coveralls. One of those leeches that had to hang into the back of your truck and snoop while you were still in line to park, then tried to lowball you so he could resell. You'd pull in, didn't take too long for him to show, gawd, here comes "Red" again.. So a few years back, I bought the only vehicle I ever bought brand new, a '97 F250 4x4 Powerstroke, and it was black and 3 weeks old. Take it to it's first swap at Cosumnes College, pretty good load in the back, head in and my buddy groans "here comes that a$$hat again". Had to stop in line for a second, and I hear the zipper of his coveralls skeeeratchhh on the passengers side of the bed  Stopped and flew around the back, "GET THE F#@K OFF MY NEW TRUCK, A$$HAT!!" The weasel took off running, and as I said he was a well-known weasel, got a round of applause from the other sellers :):):)

  19. Actually a better picture would be of a fella using his sphincter for a hat band. :D

Kinda of a funny topic. Back in the day when one of my buddies would get a new paint job I would always tell them "Oh I just want to touch it all over" I would stand there with my hands a few inches away just to get a good reaction out of them. When I had a new paint job on my own ride I would tell them "Ok get in line to touch it" We all had mega respect for each others rides and would treat them all like they were our own.

New Year's resolution suggestion: don't whine and complain so much.

  22. If you're that concerned about it, leave it in the damn garage!

Went to a car show, couple guys had a late model f150 with the stereo blairing all day. I didnt complain till there were 4 of them, belt buckles and all leaning on MY truck. When I asked them to move they pretended to not speak english... They did figure it out soon enough though.

Just put one of these on the roof, nobody will come near your ride.

  26. It's a question as old as time itself. I'm sure shortly after the first paints were made, some caveman somewhere had to beat another cavemans ass for leaning on his "drawring" on some stone wall.

I think it's an entitlement issue, and a lack of respect, usually formed from years of not working hard on anything them damn selves.

I spent fifteen hours this summer buffing and waxing my wagon. You can't really appreciate how big your car is until you have covered/ rubbed every square inch of it six or seven times over the course of 15 hours. The first time my 3 boys (4, 6, and 9) saw the car, I knew I was always going to have a small bottle of Windex and a shammie at the ready because "No touching!" was not going to be an option.

I have decided this is what comes with having a special car. People want to touch it because its like touching magic... everyone's hoping some of it will rub off. It's the reason why I smile like a loon every time I drive my car, and why I will probably invest another fifteen hours into buffing and waxing it again this summer.
