why pre 65

    Zocci, d agastino and Dore have all done some nice mid 60`s customs. I feel that all cars should be judged on ther own merit and not on some year date.Pre 65 wagons and 4 doors are O.K. now but were they always? If I was told to never post pics of my caddy because it`s to "new" I would but so far Iv`e gotten nothing but good response here so go figure:)

    I'm working on a 65 barracuda with a 225 slant six, trying to make it into a fast car(a sleeper) it is not a muscle car, its just a fancy Valiant. And the next time someone asks if its GOT A HEMI? I'm going to kick them in the balls.Its to bad , There was a lot of cars in the middle 60's that were'nt muscle cars but make cool customs. The realy old stuff is getting harder to find ,and to guys in my age group(30 to 45) those are the cars we remember as kids that were cool.Hope the board can exspand some day to include some of the cool customs from the mid 60's.     I.m also working on a 59 dodge half ton thats lowered in the front and running a 230 flathead six with a split ehaust and am working on a 2 intake for it, also starting to plan out a 25 t (just gathering parts) and besides that i just shaved my head tonight because its just been to damn hot around here ( montana). Gregg

    I think there is, it seems in all the magazines you have either over restored number matching cars or pro-touring, big rims and fuel injected cars. You really don't see too many cars running around like they would have been in the late 60's to early 70's. I still have my first car, yeah it happens to be a muscle car. I love all cars, right now I am getting into Austrailian muscle cars.

    Sure there is such a thing as a "traditional" '67 Chevelle or "period correct" '69, er, '70 Duster.

    Narrow Crager SS wheels with short, skinny, white letter tires up front. Wide Crager SS wheels with tall, fat white letter tires and Gabriel Hi-Jackers out back.

    Same treatment for either car. When I was in high school, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a late '60s or early '70s machine done up like this.

    It's just not the "tradition" and "period" that relates to this board. ;)

    Muscle cars are cool as hell but do not belong in an traditional hotrod board.

    There are period correct 60's cars. My buddy's dad has a '62 Corvette fuelie that he bought in the mid 60's and used to drag race. Cragars, hurst slicks, Stewart Warner guages with a prominant SunPro tach. He ditched the Fuelie setup (which he still has) in favor of dual AFBs. The paint is all checked and the chrome has kinda gone by the way side, but it's as-is from 1968

    I doubt seriously that German Sports car will seat six and a trunk full of groceries. I'd rather have a 65 Marlin then an AMX anyday of the week.

    I don't care much for muscle cars... I like street machines... post '55 american made cars, hot rodded to go fast.

    I got a '55 Chevy 150... so my buying crap is out for a while, but on the short list was a '67 Camaro, a '72 vaga and a '68 Nova... either one, done up right... and built to haul ass, gives me chills.

    Then again, I like to go fast and not just look cool sitting on a tire with a PBR in my hand.

    Granted, early cars can be built to haul ass... and should be built that way, but man... there's something about the other cars, built right, that just scream quarter mile!

    I guess street racing in the early 90's left an impression on me... when it was all about Camaros, Chevelles and Novas... early Mustangs were for chicks, and late model Mustangs were things you probably wouldn't want to bet against... like someone said, you couldn't tell if it's run 13's or 9's!!

  22. Can someone please tell me what's wrong w/ Muscle Cars? Seriously.

    The "right" muscle car is just as right to me as the "right" Hot Rod or Kustom. I don't mean a '69 Z-28...I mean a '69 Z-28 that was set up for Trans-am racing or set up for the drags...ligthened, tweaked, and provided w/ a hugely cammed and blown big block.

    I don't give a fuck if it's a Volkswagen, Deuce, or Ferrari...highly tuned, race oriented cars are cool and will always be cool, no matter what they are.

    It wasn't that they weren't good machines, like you mentioned.

    IMHO the traditional hot rodders of that era, who developed their craft through experience, perceived Muscle cars as the way non-rodders could just buy their way into their realm.

    Very similar to our current resentment of the "yuppi-fication" of the sport today.

    That's an interesting viewpoint and one I agree with but never thought about.
    Ya see.... i grew up and cut my teeth on musclecars. Yes, they had instant power but that didn't stop us from trying to keep them in one piece or trying to get more HP. If it wasn't for them i would be on some needle point board.
     
  28. IT's all just a matter of taste.. I'm not really gung-ho about muscle cars. They have thier place and i'm glad some folks take to restoring and keeping them around..

    also seen plenty of later model cads, oldsmobiles and whatnot which have taken on a traditional look and are actually pretty cool...

    hell my first car (which i still have) is a 78 chevy malibu.. it's plain jane, all black, and minimalist. hell you might even say traditional.. who's gonna tell me i'm wrong?? :) ..
     
  29. Here's a couple pics for ya greggski....
    Low 90's, low 14's.
    Respectable street performance in anyone's book.

    Yeah . . . I know all about them 10 second street cars . . . usually timed with a wrist watch over an estimated 1/4 mile.

    Anyhow . . . up to the point where the 55 and especially the 56 Chevy's came in along with the 57's, if you wanted a hot rod you had to build it.
    The whole damn car in some cases and in others build the engine or swap in a big - at the time - OHV.

    Once guys - and a few enlightened young women - found out you could have a strong running car straight from the factory, ride in comfort, haul ass when required and the only effort required was to meet the monthly payment, that was pretty much the handwriting on the wall for hot rods.

    When the drug culture came to be, quite a few people got lazy and a drug induced high became the preferred thing for some.

    The 60's on into the 70's saw the factories back off from performance cars and very few guys were still running or building hot rods.
    Most guys, even those who didn't do drugs, somewhere along the line they decided working on their own car wasn't cool and many of them got to the point where they couldn't fix much.
    Works ok as long as the checkbook can handle it, after that it was sink or swim for a lot of them.

    Somewhere along the line some guys - Boyd as an example, like him or not - realized that other guys who were at an age where they'd grown up around hot rods, liked them and didn't want to build one were ready-made customers sitting around with $$$ in their hot little hands.

    These guys probably didn't own a hot rod when they were younger; due to lack of cash, lack of talent or the most important part, lack of (to quote Larry the Cable Guy) - "Get er done" had now decided that somebody else could sweat, bleed and slave over dirty old car parts and figured they could throw money at a builder and be right up there with the other guys and their hot rods.

    I don't have a problem with Gold Chainers and I'm thankful they exist.
    Like it or not, without them we wouldn't have a lot of specialty parts available that makes building our so-called trad rods easy.

    When they start claiming they built it is when I tune out and walk away.
    My dad couldn't stand liars and I am my father's son....


    Not the whole answer to the pre-64 question, but a good part of it.
    You gotta cut em off somewhere or your show will be full of not particularly interesting cars.

    Nope! Techincially, the 64 GTO is America's FIRST muscle car...........your precious Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds are actually PONY CARS and NOT muscle cars. Here let me repeat that once again NOT MUSCLE!

    Whoever said it was because people no longer had to hotrod their own car to make it go fast was right. Detroit watched common folk to it all those years and decided to capitalize on it by creating a factory hotrod.......also known as a muscle car.

    I LOVE GTOS!!!:D
