Projects Why sell cars without a title?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by greybeard360, Aug 21, 2024.

  1. Try exporting a car out of the U.S. without a title- it is not easy (might be impossible). I have bought a few cars out from the U.S., the first thing I ask is if it has a clear title. It's not worth a pinch of cocky crap once the car is on the boat, we don't need no stinkin' titles!

Vermont was issuing titles if you lived out of state....They stopped recently..if you have proof of ownership and some history I'm told you can submit to the courts here in NY and a judge will order DMV to issue a title...Its supposed to be inexpensive though I haven't got any proof yet..

In 2021 I sold a 34 Ford coupe with no title to a guy in France. All I had was a registration in my name. The shipper picked it up and it arrived in France a month later. He registered it and drove it until this year. He sold it to a car dealer somewhere in Europe who sold it again apparently. Don’t know what they had to go through to ship and register it but whatever it was didn’t take them long.

Home built cars have no title. Process was assisted by NSRA regional rep.

    List of Safety Items.

    All receipts for build.

    Inspections at Police Station.
    - funny story ride along around block.
    - what are extra wheels for.
    - mufflers, about 40bags of steel wool in longer side pipes.

    Title Issued - Street Legal.

Have not read the entire thread but in California an old car with no tittle is no issue. Creating a new title is a fairly simple DMV and CHP process. I do not view a “BOS only” as anything to worry about, and does not diminish the value of the car in any way.

  8. No. Brought to states that don’t care

  9. No, couldn't get it titled in NY.

But what's wrong with a Granada?
Front engine rear drive, they have the big Ford ball joints, ether an 8" or 9" Ford, it was a car built in the U.S.A or Canada not in a country that sneak attacked us and most import I wouldn't have had a payment book!

I live in Alabama and have 2 cars that I bought with titles from other states but Alabama didn't start issuing titles till 1976(?) and so since both are older than that I was not issued a new title here. I kept both titles but made sure the sellers signed them. I'm not aware of a 35 year rule (see post #22) but have never had any trouble selling a car from here in the past as long as it was 1975 or earlier. Alabama wants a BOS for every car sold regardless of whether it has a title or not. Also, every car from out of state has to be inspected by either a police officer or DMV employee and the serial number or VIN run to make sure it isn't stolen. Now if the car doesn't have a serial number or VIN, then you have a problem....

Not at all. Every single state has a process by which the seller can get a replacement title.

Unfortunately, there is no shortage of lazy people that cannot be bothered to do that, and most want top-dollar to gift that task to the buyer. In this state that would require a trip to CHP for an inspection, or paying a service to process it.

I had to get a replacement title on a vehicle not that long ago. It cost a whopping $27. It took about 25-minutes at the DMV to apply. It arrived 6-business-days later.

Now, if you still live at the registered address, you can do it online.

That was almost 83-years-ago. It might be time to move on.

Payment books disappeared a long time ago, too.

Not disagreeing with you but I've spent longer than 25 minutes at the DMV asking what time it was!

Here in GA, they do the same. After a certain year, a title is trash...I think it is 1963 here. But, they send the Sheriff out here to your casa to do a vin check. so that is nice...

This is also true. When I was behind the iron kurtain of CA, I told the girl at DMV the car was transferred from private property to my trailer, then to my private property. Never touched your fucked up roads. I had to sign a paper, and that was that. No $1200 back fee. Waived it all. Funny thing, that is a true story.

    California form REG256.

Just fill that out with that exact statement.

People complain about California all of the time, but the DMV is easy here, if you follow the instructions.

As a Texan... it was a massive pain in the ass for two of my cars.

I have heard before that it is illegal to sell a car without a title here but I can't find any proof of that and I'm not sure which agency would bother enforcing it even if it was true.

  22. I got a title to an old ride!!!!
Got a parts truck, 65 c40. Came with a title.
Oldest one I ever had. Totally worthless in bama.
    Might frame it

When we lived in Idaho, bonded title wasn't too terrible. Some registered mail to the last titled owner, bonded title for I think it was 3 years then clean title. Moved to Oregon and absolutely no way according to DMV. Think there will probably be a few cars in my kids' names along the way.

We need to get back on track here. Many thoughts and opinions on all things political but best be left to PM's. That said I'll end with consider John McClain's actions on this issue. Now back to title issues.

That’s the way it’s been in Georgia for a long time. On older vehicles it’s common to have nothing more than the tag receipt to show ownership.

  26. In the state of Virginia a title is king.. regardless of year. Show up at DMV with a Bill of Sale and no title to try and register a car and you get "the look" from the clerk!

No I don't. It's being sold as a parts car. If I did anything I made it cheaper to buy without a title. IF the buyer wishes to pursue a bonded title they can do the work. The only cars I have bonded have been 2 doors and convertibles. Big difference in value.

I haven’t read all these posts, as this has been addressed many , many times! That answer to this question total depends on what state you live in. Some states are easy, some states a little harder, some states difficult. Some vehicles cannot ever be titled legally. We just had one, here in Oklahoma we had to deal with. Again it is different in different states!

I don't mind to buy a car without a title. In Tennessee it's not a bad process to get one. I've gotten 3 this year, probably 10 total in the last 5 years. I picked up a 66 Chevelle 3 weeks ago, 11 days later I had a title in hand. Not a big deal. No overpriced fees.

  30. I once bought an old shovelhead Harley last registered in NH, which doesn't do titles after a certain amount of years. All completely above board.

I went to a tag and title place and they literally refused to help me due to their misreading/misunderstanding of titling laws in the state that I was living in at the time. They should have accepted the old registration and issued a new title.

I could tell I wasn't going to get anywhere with the person behind the desk, so I drove down to the DMV and was in and out with all my paperwork in a half hour... the opposite of how these situations usually go.
