39's are beautiful. Pig nose? Ugly? I don't think so. This was my target year to buy for a long time, just never found one in good enough condition. I had to be talked into buying my '41. Call me strange, but I really dig 38-39 Ford Pickups.
I think the 38-39 Fords are ugly also, but in my search for affordable iron thats what I came up with. Besides the grill differences, 39's got hydrualic brakes. A couple of minor differences I have seen, hubcaps, gauges, and the crank for the windsheild is on top of the dash in 39, where 38 is sticking out ready to bust a center p***engers head open. I've been watching pictures one the HAMB and there are a few cool ones. I want to build mine fenderless for now and maybe add fenders later. Sure wish I could find a grill and hood for a reasonable price.
I'm building a '39 Chevy right now. Other than the number of bars in the grill, the ribs in the firewall, and the dashboard styling, there isn't much difference between a '39 and a '40 (bumper might be different too, but I'm adapting other stuff to mine, so I haven't paid much attention to that). Mine's actually a mix of '39-'46, but I'm putting a '39 nose on it, so that's what I'm calling it. I'd post recent pics of mine, but the cab and the fenders are off right now, so there's not much to see. These old trucks got beat on, so there aren't many left around. I've been welding up bullet holes and pounding out dents for months now. Check out www.stovebolt.com for some good GM photo galleries of this era's trucks.
the '39 GM trucks are a right handsome design it wouldn't take much time at all to get to like one here's my buddy "lazy Ted's" more common '37 Stude..
