Why were 30/31s not cool back in the day?

    Then ... as now
There was a lot of FOLLOW THE LEADER :D

A lot of the fast guys ( like Vic Edelbrock and others ) had 32 Ford roadsters.
    You know Vic could have gotten a cheaper Model A to race ... but the 32 had a better frame and a V8 P O W E R was a natural ... in the late 30's.

As the cars got faster and faster ( read that NOT dual purpose  ) ... the T and A bodies becme more desirable ... because of the wind resistance. Just taking the windshield of was worth 5 MPH at 100 MPH. A 28/29 was supposed to be 5 MPH faster than a Deuce and a T was another 3/4 MPH faster than a A ...

    4/5 MPH was a huge difference ... :)

In pure speed events, evolution brought about a preponderence ot T's and '29's over '32's as the frontal area issue was manifested by speed measurments...but the '30-31 was never very popular even before that. Fact, not opinion, at least in light of the several books available showing original pics of lakes meets...'30-31's are almost absent in the rows of deuces and '29's, and in these early pics there are both dedicated racers and obviously street driven rides.
There have always been preferred Fords...in the fifties and sixties, when parts were still pretty easy to find:
'30-31's were still seldom rods...but most of the originals A's chugging around were the late ones.
street and drag people put '40 tin on their '39's...while circle trackers called their '40's '39's! Really!
All worthwhile '35's got '36 noses...
    '33's got '34 noses...nowadays this has reversed!
'37's and '38's and '41's were parts cars; now at the magazines are full of '37's.

Why not just simply ask Don Montgomery yourself? I thought he was a member here on the hamb? He lives locally around here, so I'll ask him next time I see him, if you can't get a hold of him yourself. Might as well get the straight poop direct from the horse's mouth...:)
