Rams horn dual manifolds were used on the Lincoln motors in BIG trucks. You can often find a pair on e-bay. They look identical to the Ford manifolds, except the outer two bolt holes are not inline with the rest. The Ford rams horns, of course, have the bolt holes in the same plane. The Lincolns usually go for cheap compared to the Fords. The Fords are now repoped now too - for $$$!
I was told the easy way to tell the Lincoln rams horn from the Y block rams horn is the Lincoln's have a gusset on the top center of the manifold. Clark
Here's mine. Crane electronic ignition conversion, 4bbl manifold, 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. I've since installed a set of Red's Headers. Nice thick flanges - sounds pretty mean through the open headers. The truck's not completed yet so I haven't test drove it yet.
Picture has been posted before, but in case you missed it... McCulloch supercharger, Stromberg carbs, Fenton intake, Du-coil ignition, Thomas magnesium rockers and Hedman headers. 1957 Ford Courier
Y blocks are beautiful motors, great sound that IMO rivals that of a flathead. My ex had a a 61 fullsize w/ a 292 in it. She sent it out for a rebuild ($$$$$$$) but when it came back it was in the ballpark of 290 ponies and it MOVED! I was surprised!
Are those Ford emblem valve covers? If so, did you make those yourself or were they available back then?
Any truck 292 had the raised letter FORD valve covers. Mines got 'em. He just painted the letters all nice - look good.
Just ran across some ram horn manifolds today for the y block while surfing. http://www.ford-y-block.com/Ramhorn.htm
I also have became as a Y-blocker. Hell, why not. So far I've done a 292 with twin turbo set up and currently working on a single turbo 8-point fuel injection Y-block.
I just put dual straights on the 292 in my '61 Mercury, it really woke it up, and it's the best sounding motor I've ever had with straights. It had single exhaust factory, but no crossover, not sure when they started that. My '61 pickup has a crossover.
I have a 55 Customline with the 272. Is there anyone in the SoCal area who would not mind showing me the ropes with these motors? Mine is currently running but leaks like a stuck pig, and I have already replaced the rear main with the rubber one and it still leaks. i want to learn to turn wrenches on this thing, but need a mentor. Thanks
My '61 fairlane has a 312 in it. I cut off the single pipe and drove it down to the muffler shop and had dual pipes fitted up. I had no hood on it t the time as the motor had just been put in. You wouldn't believe the looks and hollers I got driving it home. Those dual pipes with gl*** packs just rapped.Y-blocks are cool. They are a bit difficult to get parts for though. At least compared to a sbc or even a flathead for that matter.
What you guys don't aperciate is that Y blocks are good to use for more than just Y blocks. Did you know the head is a near bolt on for '29 - 32 Plymouth four bangers? And I'm not the only guy to have done it. Somebody had to tell me.
I just run mine stock. It had been sitting since 78 when I got it in the ninties, fired right up, and has been running great ever since. Why mess with a good thing. Maybe if it breaks, I'll hop it up. It's all original factory. It's got more than enuf oomph for my 56 ford delivery. Single exhaust, soI just cruise it. It's good up till 55mph, then the factory 4.29 gears keep me in check... -GothY-
No ****, now that's interesting! I've run 2 Y's in my 54' Merc. The original 256 Merc engine (a bored 239) and I'm presently running a 62' block with 56' heads and an Edelbrock w/trip 94s. They are without a doubt the best sounding engine I've ever heard!
Good luck trying to kill one of those engines. I had one in my '56 P/U and I was anything but nice to it. It never gave me a bit of trouble. Those engines might outlive us all. As mentioned before, just keep the oil clean.
John Mummert's www.ford-y-block.com website is THE resource for Y-Blocks, hands down. Ted Eaton www.eatonbalancing.com is also a Y-guru and hell of an engine builder. Here's my C2AE 292 Y-Block in my Model T with an Edmund's 3x2 Intake & Stromberg 97's...
