I would never sell my three window it was my first car. I guess it will go to my kid when im worm dirt. I dont get the guys that never keep one, it really sucks bad when you busted your ass helping a good buddy and they sell the thing. That shit tends to make me not help any more.
Eh, I get pissed because there's so many other cars I want, and all my money time and blood is being poured into something I can take or leave. I want a early 60's Bird, or Riv, or 50 Ford, or 54 Chevy... Lots of cars I want to take a swing at. Back at my parent's house, I have a 79 Malibu that I sold to my brother, I want it back, I love that car more than anything. My first love, i've hand my hands on every bolt in it. Nothing special, other than it's mine. I swore I wasn't going to part with it, but I did. Big regret.
I got my 57 Ford the day of my senior prom. We've been through a lot together. In those 4 years, I've seen some of the best and worst times of my life. I feel I owe that car a certain amount because when shit really got bad and it felt like everything was going down the crapper, it was there for me to turn to and to give me something positive to look forward to. A car can be something more than a compilation of iron, rubber and plastic, it can take on human characteristics and because of that, I think it's possible to have some emotional attachment to it. The vehicle itself can also be the tangible symbol of good times and bad; that trip to the shore with that special someone, that outrageous burnout that put inch deep holes in the pavement...stuff like that. Not to say that the right offer or amount of money couldn't cause us to part ways. However, we've been through a lot together and I hope we have a lot more to go.
I have had about 15 classic cars in 15 years. For me I always want to trade them up. My tastes change and then once I sell a car... a couple years later I end up buying one like I sold... it goes around in cycles... Kind of a bad pattern. Hyfire
That is the answer to the question...in my eyes @ least. I'm am willing to bet that most of the people who actually build thier cars through completion are the ones that sell them off. Why? cause they want a new and more exciting challenge. They enjoy building them, not the actual car itself. But there are exceptions ...the guy who builds lots of cars and keeps that 1 just cause it has some meaning to him. I fall into all three of the mentioned categories. I'm only 25 and have had a handfull of "old cars" - simply because the only place I can store them/work on them is @ a friends garage that is over 90miles 1 way (I still go there everyweekend to work on my '33 though): '47 Ford P/U '66 AMC Rambler '69 Chevy P/U All of which I built and sold...because I could take them or leave them. I'm currently working on a '33 Ford P/U which will most likley Never be sold - but when it is "done" - (they are never done) I will be looking for something New and exciting to build In the List would be: '32-'38 Chevy P/U Cab to be Little Brother to my Ford '34 Dodge P/U Cab - just to say I have a Chevy Ford and Dodge '34 International Cab's are pretty cool too '62-'72 Chevy 3/4t4x4 P/U Long bed with a Plow for the "Work & Tow Truck" '49-'51 Ford Fordor - bagged (for when I eventually have kids) '67-'68 Fastback Stang (for the soon to be wife) By the way if you know of a '32-'38 Chevy Cab in Good condition for sale...let me know I'm gathering parts for the next build
I usually like buying something and then put my special touches on it. ei: slammed to the ground. Most people come up and say "I should have quessed that was yours" Then I have someone who wants/needs it more than me and I send it on its way. I quess I like the thrill of something new in the garage. Bill
Will be selling my deuce sedan when its finished in the spring. Have to partially pay for daughter #2's university education. She is contributing a portion too. Two daughters down, two to go.
I thought this post was about squigy but since he knows he is a sick man. no need to say anything more. I want to sell the wagon to start a new project but just can not seem to let loose. Why ? not fully sure except to say its 'me', my first old car and I have tons of money and sweat into it and trust it more then any car I have ever owned.
The reason i will not sell my Galaxie is because i feel that i owe it to the car to finish it one day, make it look the way i see it in my head. i met alot of people because of the Galaxie, it helped me settle in L.A. It deserves to be finished, its my baby. I will have it when im old, maybe hand it on to someone in the family.
I recently sold mine. Origionally I was trying to sell it so I could have the money to build my T coupe whenever I get it back from Clark. Then the big General (GM) decided they were going to close a bunch of plants and mine was one of them. So I ended up selling the car so that I could pay my wifes Impala off.
I won't sell the Old Ford because,(1) It's the first car I ever drooled over.(2)It's the first car I ever got to really haul ass in.(3)I promised the guy I got it from I'd never sell it,that I would pass it on to my kids, and if they don't want it, give it to some poor sap who deserved it but would prolly never be able to afford to possess one, when I was too old and decrepid to drive it and or care anymore.(4)I was never any good at selling shit anyway.LOL Hey MOJO,what year is that Stang,my wife wants one? Is a 65 T-Bird old enough for ya? Later,T.OUT
I buy because I have an itch that needs to be scratched. I sell because I have scratched that itch. I have probably owned 300-400 cars. I have probalby owned 300-400 motorcycles. I have probably owned 200-300 bicycles. I have a vehicle I bought about 32 years ago. I have never owned a Sherman Tank. A steam locomotive. A Ferarri. A '40 Ford coupe. A totally wicked virtually undrivable on the street vehicle. A Pierce-Arrow speedster. A bi-plane that actually is airworthy. An antique schoolbus. A steam roller, with real steam. A horse drawn road grader. I still have a lot of itches to scratch, and sometimes I don't know the itch is there until I see it.
difficult question to answer,Here goes Had alot of cars in 40 years.Wish I had kept a few and glad I got rid of the rest,They were the stepping stones to a better year or better model.Had to sell mostly to finance the next.allways wished I kept my 32 5/w but having 4 back operations and the car being chopped and channelled it just wasn't going to get any better to drive anymore. We go pretty far and I needed to be comfortable in what I drive. The Merc was bought in NewJersey in 1980 and I still have it to this day,That's a keeper, and the wife likes it too.The 36 is debateable at this point,I would get rid of the car if the price was right or I found another 32 5/w in the same price range. What ever i have I drive, when I'm driving my truck people ask about my Merc when I'm driving that they ask about my 36, I drive what I want when i want to,And I drive im hard and put them away wet.WHEELS
I guess I am in the keeper category. I've had all three of my rides for more than twenty years, and two of the three for more than thirty. The '40 coupe was my first car; got it when I was fifteen (1967). Got the '41 pickup in '75, and my '29 hiboy roadster in '82. All three of them need a bunch of work, but isn't that always the way it is? Each has its own strong points. The coupe is practical. The roadster is for adventuring. And, of course, everyone needs a truck. Having at least one running for daily driver duties makes my life better. They may not be as comfortable, functional, or get as good mileage as a late model, but driving a hot rod daily is cool, and after this much time, I don't see myself getting rid of any of them. I can't believe I missed this thread when it passed around the first time.......
