my 265 in my 50 shoebox has been running great. Just couple of months ago found original cast iron 4 barrel manifold and carb. rebuilt the carb, has just been running really good, get ready to run to town a little while ago, wouldn't idle! dies every time, will start right up runs fine at higher RPM's but no friggin idle, no vacuum leak, fuel filter clean, good fuel pressure ( holley electric pump)...........DAMN IT

Sorry,i dont have an answer for your question, but i have a 265 too in my 51' shoebox.
Its a 55' block, only way to mount that motor is from front.I'd like to see how yours is mounted,if yours is front mounted too.

Okey,my plan is to fabricate my own mounts at some point, just curious about the mounting because of that.I have no clue whats inside of my 265,the seller told me it was rebuilded 4 yrs ago and it started at first crank, after over 2 months sitting in the cargo container..
    So,i guess its healthy.
    Good luck with your 265!

dizzy lose timing has changed. for some reason some bolts do not keep it tight. i believe the threads dont go far enough.

Would also suggest checking points, condenser, and coil.

My first thought is a vacuum leak followed by carburetor. Something is screwing up the idle mixture. Does the gas in your area have alcohol in it? That can dissolve gaskets and put the pieces in the fuel system. It could just be bad gasoline too!

  12. I'd definitely vote for this one first.

Then check the other easy stuff (plugs, wires, etc). Then think about timing chain, as it happened almost overnight.

If it won't idle it will be difficult to check timing. If you have to rev it up to keep it running it will get into the mechanical advance. If the timing shows up as advanced it might not have changed. If it shows up as retarded, the distributor might have slipped or the timing chain might have jumped.

We just went through something similar with my nephews 51 Bus Coupe, 350/auto combo. We did a complete rewire of the car, and then could'nt get it to start, no matter what we tried. Everything was new or rebuilt, and nothing made sense. After throwing a lot of new parts at it, in complete frustration we replaced the NEW spark plugs with NEW plugs. How do NEW spark plugs go bad? But, after replacing the plugs, it fired right off and runs great. I'm still lost on what happened, it was getting spark, and even bridging the gap. I guess stuff just happens.
