old Friday Art… Hill Acala Modified Roadster

    Hello,

We used to see this roadster almost weekly as it was a favorite of ours. The look and style was right up our teenage alley, so to speak. The roadster just had that look and stance. But, the wild pipes running up and over the rear tire was definitely one of a kind.

It is credited with the first "moon eyes" painting prior to the Dean Moon logo. Boy, a copyright logo over the years would have brought in a ton of cash if one was so inclined during those early drag racing days.

When we were racing in our class with the 58 Impala, we saw it in the pits and when I was in the stands, filmed the races of the roadster. The Roadster classes were always very competitive and fun to watch.

Later on, many years after our hot rod years, I was invited to the original Lion’s Dragstrip museum opening. The set up days involved using my composite films of all the 58-60 drag racing I had taken over the years. For some reason, despite the “pros” inside of the fence, closer to the action, my color 16mm films are the only ones shown of the year of drag racing. And, I was stuck behind the spectator’s side fence without an expensive movie camera without a telephoto lens.

But, the old saying was… I was there with my older brother and it was fascinating for a young teen. Since racing in a specific class was our weekly thing, there were times when I wandered all over the drag strip trying to get the best location for films, during the breaks for our class. Sometimes, my brother would ask if I was going to film his racing in the Impala. So, with the distance from the spectators side, there are a lot of films of the A/Stock car class racing. I loved drag racing and so, I also filmed what I liked.

My brother was already looking ahead into the future. He mentioned putting in a supercharged SBC motor in an open roadster for that specific class, as per our build and motor size. He was already talking about going against those roadsters per class if the motor and build fit the parameters. Something about the wind flashing by in an open roadster at full acceleration... Dreamer…

Within several years, we ended up in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class with our supercharged 671 on a 292 SBC motor in the 40 Willys Coupe. If we had followed that path, the motor would have put us in the B/Modified Roadster Class as our next step.

My composite films were put on a giant 80 inch screen on the wall behind the Hill Acala Hunter Oil Roadster section and people were looking at the red roadster and my films. Yes!

There have been articles about this cool red roadster. It has been in magazines and on display in various places throughout the So Cal drag racing scene and hot rod events.

For drag racing folks who stopped to look at the red roadster and then spend time watching my films of drag racing at Lion’s Dragstrip with many of the drag racing cars on the museum floor, was nice. But, for the HAMB folks, it was the first time to publish and present those films on this site for the hot rod/drag race builders and enthusiasts.

Original and still viable as a competitive roadster.

This one was spotted and photographed by @Dean Lowe in 1959.
