I was wondering what it would take to get a newer Chevy six to bolt up to my old tranny in my 34 Chevy truck with original 216...I wanna go as cheap as all possible and thought I could get away from buying tranny, rearend and driveline....help a HAMBER out...thanks ...joe
I believe that a 235 will be close to a fit,But a 230 or 250 "narrow head "-motor has a V-8 bolt pattern so a bell hsg isnt available as a boltup to that 34 trans......
There are a lot of 6's that will fit all of the early gmc 6's have the same bellhousing mount i think the biggest one is a 302 but they are hard to find go to www.stoveboltengineco.com lots of good info on swaps and good links to more info. Hope this helps.
Chevrolet 235 and 261 through 1962. '54 and after have pressure oil and are probably your better choice. GMC 228, 248, 270 and 302, though they are a little longer and you'll have to modify the front mount to work. GMC uses a different fly wheel. After 1962 I don't believe any motors were built that will fit your current bellhousing. If you change bellhousings you'll need to make enough other changes that it will no longer be cheap or easy. The good news is that lots of guys pull these motors to relace them with V-8s so finding one shouldn't be too hard, and with a little looking you might find a good one for little or nothing. inliners.org and stovebolt.com are good sources for more information on these motors and swapping them.
Go with what he said. 235 engines (post 53) are fairly simple to find. Easy to get parts for too. The Jimmy's are bigger, beefier and all around better, but not quite as easy to come by, but definately not hard to find either. Just be advised, the pre 55 stick 3 speed won't really hold up to alot in a heavy, stock type, car or truck. The truck trannies have a low, low first gear too. It also, if it isn't a Powerglide, had a ratio in the rear of 4.10:1. So you'll be revvin fool, keep that in mind. That said, why do you wanna ditch the 216? If its a cruiser, it'll do just fine. If you're gonna use your truck as a truck, get a 235/261. And, as always, try the search function here. This subject comes up pretty often, and there is alot of great advice in the old posts. I have a few articles, books and things around here, so if you need any help, questions, etc, PM me or whatever. But I have no money, so you're SOL there. Good luck! Jay Jay
