I am putting a 302 in the car and want a manual trans. Will the mustang T5 shifter location work with a bench seat?

You might want to check into a T5 from an S10, I think the shifter is farther forward.
I'm using the 302/5 speed from an 85 Mustang in my 56 and the shifter is about 18½ inches from where the trans hump angles up into the firewall. I have buckets in mine so I don't know if the shifter would interfere with the bench seat.

You can use the tailshaft from an s10, they all interchange.

I've got a mustang t-5 behind a Y, and I moved my seat back about an inch.

Its a tight squeeze in there

    I put a T5 in my '53 Victoria.

Using an S10 rear case, the shifter will be quite a ways forward, so you'll have to use a long stick. The longer the stick, the longer the throw between gears.

If you use a Mustang or Camaro rear case, the shifter will be practically under your seat.

BUT --- if you can find an Astro Van rear case, the shifter will be about halfway between those two, perfect for our cars. A standard S10 shifter will bolt right up to the Astro Van rear case.

The single best addition to my 55 was the five speed. Never give up!

Same, the good y-block and the t-5 were the best things I did to my car.
