Will E15 Fuel damage your car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Roger Walling, Dec 4, 2012.

  1. Actually I notice that the Exxon additives do run cleaner. I deal with this stuff from a dozen suppliers every day as well as having run experiments with my own daily which is a 2000 Flex fuel truck.

And to your reply for Gimpy, it hits the nail on the head. Different fuels require different tuning and requirements.

Tuning is key, and it MUST BE DONE, which brings up an important point.

These fuels are "supposed" to reduce emissions, and they bring the cabon-cycle from a multimillion-year one, to a multi-month one, which is good. They do, however, pose an emissions issue.

For any vehicle that is not tuned, or cannot be easily (or legally) tuned to accommodate the increasing Ethanol content, they will alter the emissions profile.

Since the AF ratio for Ethanol is 6.0:1 vs. 14.7:1 for gasoline, mixing the two effectively makes an increasingly lean mixture on a vehicle that can't compensate. This will increase combustion chamber temperatures, which INCREASES NOx emissions. Since most modern (I know, OT here) vehicles are NOT equipped to compensate for the fuel, many, including my OT/DD, which was on the hairy-edge of too lean, from the factory, will fail a smog check without being "adjusted" (which is illegal, in my state, BTW. My mods are all hidden.) due to NOx emissions that are too high.

Never mind what that level of lean mixture will do to valves, etc.

Still not sure how this is supposed to "help".

  3. It is good info any way you look at it Gimpy. Thanks.

BTW, most of the country does not have to mess with the emissions testing like you guys out there.

For now, you don't. Don't expect that to last.

    Be prepared.
