I took off on a 1200 mile trip a few years back with a car that I had built. It had 350 miles on it when I left and I knew the car. I did get to know the car a little better during the trip. A long trip with an unknown car and I would be anxious. Good luck.
Little Rock,Ar 501-425-7484 Got some tools, mig welder, cherry picker, beer, and so on. No shop only a carport. Let me know if you need some help! Dan
If you are around the south side of Atlanta Ga,and need some assistance, I am about 6 miles away from exit 221 on I-75 south. I work the evening shift,so I could not assist after about 1 P.M. till 11 P.M. other than that,I'll help if I can. cell# 404 661 7149.
try it...worst case...it breaks down and you rent a Uhaul with a tow dolly or trailer so you still get the fun of driving across country... good luck bryan
Keep a journal and take lots of pics, I'm sure all of us would like to be doing what your going to do!!!!!!!!!! Get that bitch on Route 66!
Im not a fortune teller ,but- Id say unless you are 3' tall-young -tough as hell- and one lucky sonofabitch- you will regret that decision..... It will cost ya more in lost time/work and fuel than a hauler would cost.... I have an A roadster and I can tell you it sits better [than that channelled ride]-the seating position in there will require FREQUENT stops. I hope you Chioropractor is a proctologist too- and also 3' tall -so he can ride with you.... Good luck. --------anyway I'd help ya if called on -660 825 4080 days N.E. Missouri [Kenny]
I've driven some pretty questionable vehicles very long distances, and they've always made it. I've had rental cars fall apart on the way out of town. It's always a crap shoot, so go for it! Many a time I've been driving 45MPH down the interstate just cause I don't want to stress anything, those are the breaks. AAA, spare gas, tool kit, cell phone and that's about the best you can prepare for. I damn near drove my T to Seattle, if the radiator didn't have clearance issues when i dropped the motor in it would have been a done deal, had to make other plans. I may have regretted it, or towed it home, who knows, but it woulda been a story to remember! I wish I'd have done it, may still........ If you head north to Reno, NV for some reason let me know I'll give you my number
If your taking I-10 which I believe you would, Pensacola should be about half way. If you get this far and need help, my buddy has a huge shop specifically for building rods. Located on Hwy 98 on the Gulf Coast between Pensacola and Navarre. Root-He has everything, lifts, welders, engines, trans, you name it. You can tell him Mike the Cop told you to call.
Looks like you'll get to see I-10 from one end of the country to the other. Remember El Paso, Tx is the same distance to L.A. as it is to LA (Louisiana). Be super careful along I-10 were it runs close to Mexico, West Texas. Don't stop if you don't have to. Would hate to see that car vanish to Mexico somewhere. There are lots of us HAMB'r here in TX. I'll PM you my cell. Got a shop, or just a cold beer for ya if you decide to or need to stop in Houston.
YOU DAMM BETTER...I WISH YOU LOTS OF LUCK, MOST OF ALL PATIENCE HAVE LOTS OF FUN!! NO HURRIES, YOU HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD CONGRADULATIONS ON ONE MORE BAD RIDE. Like my mother in Law keeps telling me. "Your'e building memories" Take a camera, roll of TP, a cooler of cold drinks, and a thermos of coffee. Keep the greasy side down and stay between the lines. We can't afford to loose any rodders. Gumpa
If you get lost(only reason to come this way) and need anything in eastern Iowa pm me and I'll try to help. Nice car
Goodluck man it should be a adventure.I say the only tools ya need are a good cell phone and people standin by along the way if that phone call has to be made. The rest of the stuff will take care of itself. Couple years ago me and my wife flew oneway to LA and drove a mazda miata back to Indy.Shitty top and no radio stopped at walmart bought me a walkman. We had a blast made it in 34 hours and I mean thats haulin and I would do it again tomorrow.See america just wished I could have slowed down a little to see more of it. Goodluck and as stated take pics ought to be a blast.Maybe make a list of u-haul places along your route in case ya need to ya could rent a truck and trailer oneway and puller the rest of the way. Shoe
I hope you have enough time off of work to take it slooooow. The car gods will punish you if you THINK you are going to do this with a deadline. Is I-10 still F'd up in LA.?, I didn't risk it when I went to AR a few weeks ago. and went through I-30 from Shreveport to Meridien, MS and then went SE down some 3 digit road to get home to FL.
Goodman, Good for you, I live for adventures like the one you are about to depart on. Dont let some of these guys get you down, it is all in being prepared and proper planning. Here is my list of things I bring along on trips, Tool kit, water, oil, spare hardware, assorted size zip tie's, work clothes, warm clothes, a hat,AAA card, credit card, phone, a pocket knife, and the all important...... CASH. A friend to go with you for company and help. Good luck, take lots of photo's. If you have time make some small journal entry's every night while they are fresh in your head. My 2 cents, CBB
one more thing, and this is just my opinion, your mileage may vary: if you can, stay off of the interstates. if you've seen 90 miles of interstate anywhere in the US (with the possible exception of Glenwood Canyon in Colorado) you've seen 90% of the scenery to be seen from interstates in the US.
If you need anything, I can help you out!! I'm about two miles south of I-10 and about 40 miles east of Houston. -eddie
If I lived in Miami and bought a killer little hot rod in California there is no way I wouldn't drive that SOB home. It will cost a small fortune, you'll break down, your neck and ass will be sore for weeks but you've gotta do this. In life it isn't where you start or end - it's the journey in between that matters. If you break in East TN on I-40/I-75 call me at 865-719-9919. JH
Do you have Good Sam's and have you had to use it ? I just wondered how widespread their coverage is since I never see any Good Sams signs at service & gas stations ? Do you know how they work their coverage ? Thanks for the tip
The adventure doesnt really began until something quits working. Ask Herman Zapp (the guy who drove his 1928 Graham Paige from Argentina to Alaska recently.) He spent 4 years doing it. He told me he started out with $4000, but the trip started when he ran out of money. You can go to the Graham-Paige website and read his story. PM me and I will give you my contact information
My sons made a raft out of 55 gallon drums and flakeboard, then put it in the river about 150 miles away and spent a week floating home. A real adventure is worth whatever it costs.
