Will tall 2X4's fit a 55 chevy?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by thehazmatguy, Feb 29, 2008.

  1. Will a pretty tall, but not tunnel ram tall, 2X4 set up fit under the windshield wiper motor on a tri five?

I know the 'vette style low rise 2X4s will fit. I'm looking at getting an Edelbrock air gap 2X4 manifold. The air gap is about 2 inches taller than the standard low rise, and I think I should run 1 or 1 and 1/2 inch spacers under the carbs too. I might need a total of 3 or 4 inches above the standard low rise 2X4 set up.

I don't suppose anyone has some pictures of the clearance between the rear air cleaner and the winshield wiper motor on a tri five??

I'm about to buy this set up- If I buy, set up, dyno this motor.. and find out it won't fit... i'd be "Ted Kaczynski, writing my manifesto in a shack in the woods" pissed off. :D

I don't think you'll have clearence issues there. The motor mounts far enough back inside the firewall to not be in the way. I'd be more worried about the dizzy not clearing the rear carb area unless you're running the points style or the Pertronix conversion kit.

    Hello there,
I have a 2x4 setup on my 57 chevy. I will take some pics and post them. I am going to move the wiper motor under the dash but can take some measurement for you if you'd like.

  4. I'm using a small cap MSD distributor I got on Craigslist, I should be ok on the carb to dizzy space. I can swap the cap from the MSD to the points distributor I have now- so it should be fine.

IF you use an HEI distributor it may or not fit; won't be able to pull it without removing the wiper motor however. In the old NHRA Junior Stock Cl***es where the dual 4's were allowed for a particular cl***, there's NO problem at all. Back then NHRA even allowed modified tunnel rams (and still do in Super Stock) that cleared, except possibly for air cleaners. 55'-56' firewalls are the same, although 55' never came with dual 4's; 56' did and they fit. The intake you're talking about probably won't clear an HEI distributor (not certain on that however, you'll have to see). Small air cleaners should be NO problem, the concern is mostly HEI/intake/wiper motor clearence, so I say, use a points distributor and there will be NO problem.

I'm using this manifold with 2 four barrels and about a 3/4 inch spacer under each carb. I have plenty of hood clearance. My original plan was to run the fuel line up the back of the firewall then into the fuel linkage from the carbs but the linkage actually hits the firewall so I had to turn things around and am going to have to run the line upo the front....again, I'll try to post some pics tonight ..it's a little hard to explain.

On my 56 with a BBC, a tunnel ram, and a small dist i had to remove the cap to get the distrbutor to go high enough that i could lean it to the side and around the wiper motor. Not that big of a deal, and with a small block i'd ***ume you'd even have more room.

You can get a vintage tr1 edelbrock, machine 1 inch off the top casting and run tunnel ram and air cleaners. Can't run air cleaners otherwise on a conventional tunnel ram as far as I know. I've tried it. Good luck!
