Looking for some of your accumulated wisdom here. I recently acquired an 8ba with an attached transmission, as shown in the 4 attached pictures. The gear set is in great condition, so I am wondering if it will all transplant into the spare 78(?) transmission housing I have.
If not, then is it a boat anchor ?
    Thanks in advance

Maybe a call to @Mac VP would get you what you need to know.

I don't think so. The later trans has different cut helical gears. As a general rule, all the cases with the integral bellhousing will interchange, those with the separate bell will not

Just a sec. I see that the side cover has the bracket for the clutch linkage, which means it's from a shoebox Ford ('49-'51). Ford went to the new Diamond gears during the '51 model year. Chances are some of the gears may fit, but not everything (the mainshaft for example). It's a complicated subject, so getting in touch with Mac van Pelt is probably a good idea. Your other choice is to get up close and personal to a couple of "Green Bibles". The bottom line is that without a mainshaft, you wouldn't be that much ahead

The simple answer is…..almost certainly not. The transmission in the photo is from the 1953-62 variety as used in the F-100 pickups. It is Ford’s regular light duty 3 speed for the column shift. And it’s obviously the open driveshaft design. Without going into multiple tedious details, you can definitely rule out using the gear set as part of a closed drive “39 style” transmission build.
If it’s the 1953-early 55 type, it might have a chance to be modified to operate as an open drive transmission by theoretically changing the input shaft to the 51-52 truck part (which is the correct length). I have not attempted to do this conversion so that needs to be confirmed. If the transmission is the late 55 through 1962 variety, all bets are off…..way too many parts are different to fit the 78-7006 case.

Nobody here said it was junk, we just said it won't work for what you want to do. If you are pressed for storage space, I'd rather give it away than scrap it. Good old junk is getting hard to find!

Steve I had the same trans and was in the scrap bin till a kid came over to the shop and was ticked pink to take it. He did end up using it in his truck.
If your looking for a trans I have a 1939 or 1940 Lincoln Zephyr with great gears and overdrive plus it’s closed tube at the shop
