So I picked up a set of unilug Cragars with good tires off of CL for dirt cheap. Went and grabbed some of the standard Mag lug nuts(Dorman 711-108) off the shelf at the Local Oreilly's, just as I've done in the past with some unilug supremes I picked up off CL. I never had a problem with them on the supremes and they were on a heavy, juiced up 64 Biscayne. I already bolted the Cragars on my 53 and they went on just fine. Now I am second guessing myself, because I read somewhere that if you don't use the Cragar specific lugs and washers, they are going to constantly wiggle themselves loose. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Will I be alright with the Parts store lugs and washers or should I order some Cragar specific lugs and washers? Thanks in advance!

  2. The SS wheels used to be notorious for loose lug nuts (even with the right ones) if they weren't torqued just right, I'd be nervous.....

i was told that the washer on the unilug is what centers the wheel . so ford and chevy take different washers

@29moonshine......some have a recess machined into the hub around the lug hole that the washer fit into to center the wheel. Mine do not. The washer just squeezes against the hub.

The Cragar washer is the difference, not the lug nut. Need to be sure you use Cragar washers, as they are specific to their wheels. Lug nuts are generic, other than the thread size and shank, or conical.

Paint the drum something other than white ,it will show the wheel better.

As long as the washer is flush and evenly flat in the recess, it is fine. The correct length of the lug shank is also key.

Ive used the generic shanked lug nuts and plan round washers many times on the unilugs without any problems as long as the lug holes in the wheels werent already wallowed out from being ran loose and/or mixed matched lug nuts or not enough lugs etc.

All new matching correct shank lug nuts and washers, and check em for tightness every once in a while and you should be fine.
