Okay... I know some reeeaaaalllly old guys are gonna say "oh the car would have been too new"....or this or that "is not accurate enough"...or whatever.....and admittedly, maybe I'm just a stupid young whipper-snapper (52)....but this thread really has me thinking (for a change).

Anyway, I could easily imagine (in a conceptual context) some of the Greatest Generation's car-loving creative types coming home (after saving the world) and doing their own stylized tribute to a fighter plane. Can't ya'll?

And if so....wouldn't the recreated version above be for the most part, "traditional" and/or at least "period correct" in concept? And thus, deserving of a rightful place in any such show?

And, what if there are contradictions or historical impossibilities built into the car...BUT it's built by a former WWII fighter pilot....who's gonna keep him/it out? OUCH!

Hmmmm... there is so much gray area in everything.

I guess that's why our version of the car hobby (yes, even the shit you purists abhor and most of us, at the very least, roll our eyes at) is so much more interesting than the guys who just try to outspend each other.

all this over wheels, and gettin accepted into a show? over the last few years i have noticed that almost anything gets into the "show" now. its not about tradition or rat rods or paint/primer,or who's who. ITS ABOUT THE MONEY!!!! dont worry what wheels you have, just make sure you got the dough to get in!

No... you are imagining things. The end of WWII brought about a quest for speed with the limited technology they had at hand, not a fashion show. "Show Rods" didn't begin until the later part of the '50s when everyone, in fact, began trying to outspend each other on chrome, upholstery, body mods, and paint.

They might have used a part or two, (like a seat or steering wheel) or given the car a name after their squadron, but to build a hokey WWII tribute car with functionless rivets all over the place, and fake bullet holes, and gizmology items stuck everywhere just because, just didn't happen... that is a product of the early 2000s and uniformed boredom.

Imagine what ever you want, and then build whatever you want, just don't try and pass it off as traditional or expect people in the know to agree with you just because you want to move the lines 60 years later.

There is traditional, and there is "correct," and there is everything else.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner! Someone chimed in with most cliche answer on every forum. "Do what you like".

The problem is, if you can't ask for other peoples opinions then I guess there is no need for a forum. Back in the 50s and 60s they didn't have forums. So if some of you are so "tradition" gay...what would you have Ryan do>>>kill the HAMB and start sending out little magazines like they did bitd? Fuck some of you guys take this crap to the extreme. I like being traditional but some of you are sitting on edge to split hairs. We can't even buy wheels now unless they were made over 40 years ago? Sheeesh!

I'm one of those "tradition gay" folks of which you speak.....I've lived and participated in this hobby since the 50's. Revisionist history is happening here, and we are trying to keep the record straight. You want to do your own thing, and build it your way, fine....... but at least honor history and don't try to pass it off "as back in the day" as you all like to say. ( Yes and I HATE that saying too!)

I hear my nurse calling, time for my oat meal......ta-ta.

Well, at least if you are going to have your car slammed to the ground with skirts you only need two of those wheels.:D

Well if that is your car in your avatar...I hope you are not running new tires...that is not traditional!. And make sure you only use old paint and not some new crap from a paint store...that ain't traditional. Don't use anything new...that's not traditional. Get my point? ;)

Either you get it, or you don't... and if you don't, you can't get mad at others because you are wrong. That doesn't make anything right.

Asking questions is smart. Assuming you have the right answer is not... "Who cares?" is a bad attitude to have, especially if you are building cars. You should care. You should do your research, and if you don't... then it's not right, and no matter how many cop-out fuck 'ems you say, it's still wrong at the end of the day.

This board is supposed to celebrate the correctness, not twist it into a rat rod... if you don't agree, there's room for you at Ol' Skool Rodz.

I think they good on your car in the photoshop. Run what you like, if it aint perfect it doesnt matter as long as you like it. If they made those wheels in a 15 x 5 and a 15 x 10 I would be all over them!

I have a feeling that you probably have done certain things the same way for decades and at the same time advanced other things with the same mindset. It just made those standards you've set easier.

Isn't that the point, you get it or you don't. Most of this topic was grown from opinions which were asked for. It really didn't need any of the smart ass and cockyness we have to weed through to enjoy a mature and informed discussion. I agree with your points about the "fuck 'ems" too. Some of favorite shows are becoming a sea of stuff that does more disrespect than honor to age old practices and vision.

At the end of it all, if I was the one who helped fuel the traditional element to this topic about mags and fat whites, I appologize, but I do know what I know and can see what I see. My main point was that it was a later practice or application to a certain build style. Clearly with the Vette posted, well, we know where that one belongs. I guess I could find and scan a few examples but I didn't think it was needed. I hope this doesn't close and we can move on to good examples instead of the dreaded cartoon cars.

Statistics show that only 2% of the "traditional" guys here own 32 Fords. Go hang that in your closet. lmao!

So.... did Dimebag (the OP) ever get his questions about wheels answered?

Could any of the gatekeepers at the HCP chime in here??

    Just curious.... ;)

Funny but I thought that his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek when he first posted the so called question.

These "build it your own way, screw everyone else" responses are retarded. Of course you can build your car any way you choose, its your car ......just dont be upset when people who know better tell you it sucks or doesnt belong at a particular event. If you dont like being told that, then build something that doesnt suck.

Back to the original question....no they won't get you banned. Those wheels will look good on certain cars...just not so sure about yours. I can see your car more as a chrome steelie type but that's just me.

Okay here's the nail in the threads' coffin....sorry!...

Hey man relax, I acknowledged I might be imagining things, and admitted I wasn't there. I'm just asking questions to consider all the aspects of what might be traditional or period correct mostly for me to have a better understanding. I don't wanna move any lines....and I wasn't advocating anything (other than deeper thinking).

I was just trying to be thought-provoking...to point out even our beloved Car hobby, and yes, "traditional" and "period correct" is not just black and white.

But holy-moley..obviously you know so much more than anybody I ever met, wow!, if I had just known about you, I would have PM'd you with my silly questions before I embarrassed myself so badly!

By your extraordinarily informed answer(s) I realize now that you:

    (A) Knew everybody who flew or crewed a fighter plane in WWII... AND exactly what they did when they got home...or
    (B) Know the aforementioned group of guys were, (for some reason you are about to explain?) quite unimaginative.

    But....

    a. I'm pretty damn sure you cannot claim either A or B above to be true.
    b. I don't believe there is such a thing as an original idea. How in the world can you say, unequivocally, that nobody built a "show rod" (within such a short span of time) until such and such date?
    c. About the quest for speed we can certainly agree .. but you cannot KNOW there we're no goofy guys (like me) who didn't wanna go all that fast...but, loved cars just the same! Come-on man, showin' off is for the most, part all the car hobby; racing, speed records, hot rodding, customs, show-rods, and/or the quest for speed has EVER been about isn't it?! You really don't know our fathers and grandfathers were any different, do you?

Anyway... I'll shut up (for now) maybe you get my point(s)...maybe not. I could go on, and on, and on...but I know I'm a goofy old bastard...and while I believe a lot of things, I know I really don't KNOW very much at all.

    warmly,

    Beanis
