Projects Will these tires/wheels fit my Buick...

  1. Thanks, twenty8. But that still leaves me in the dark... I am unfamiliar with such voodoo!

  2. Think 60-72 C10 rear suspension

  3. Hmm. Seems I may be more familiar than I thought. The amphibious sightseeing vehicle/vessels I used to maintain had a rear suspension setup with three arms (we called them struts) locating the drive axle and three more for the tag. The leaf springs slid in pockets on the axle housings that limited side-to-side motion. I've seen articles on medium- and heavy-duty custom trucks where the tag axle and strut mounts had been removed, leaving all the drive axle stuff in place. Seemed pretty simple and straightforward then, as now.
I'm also thinking back to my first car, a '68 Pontiac Tempest 2-door, that I'm almost certain had a form of 4-link rear. But it seems the lower arms went almost straight out from the chassis to the axle, and the uppers swung from closer to the center of the frame and went outward to the axle. Seems like it was coil spring suspension, too. But this was 48 years ago, too.

  4. The stock Truck arms 1960(?)-1972(?)

Junior Jonhson was the first to use them in 1963

NASCAR required them in all three top touring series, the Cup series now runs I.R.S., but I think the Xfintey and Craftsman Truck series to uses them.

Squablow and The Chevy Pope like this.
  5. OHkay, yeah, I get the principle. If the axle is solid mounted to the arms, would it swing the same way as from the factory Buick torque tube?

  6. Yeah, I did mean Truck arms. That system is fairly straight forward and is designed to allow "twist" in the rear suspension going around curves. I think it would be the easiest to reverse if going back to stock. I would also investigate the 57-64 Pontiac/Olds 9.3 rear axle in lieu of the 12 bolt as it has a 5 x 5 bolt circle and is pretty strong.
