I was going to see how well they wiped off on panels and the usual..hoods, decklids. I would like to use actual stabilio pencils but when the shipping is more then the pencil that kinda annoys me lol

    Hey,

I'm doubtin' you could use those as they probably contain wax as a binding agent for the lead/colours.
I've tried other pencils and always gone back to Stabilios! The cheap ones contain too much wax/binder which spells TROUBLE under One Shot Enamel.

I'd give it a try on a test panel just for kicks. Chances are they'll work if you use a light touch, just enough to leave a mark.

I've been using China Markers, a.k.a. "Grease Pencils" for 33 years with absolutely NO problems. U love a Stabilo, but down South, they melt when using them on a hot surface, plus they get so soft they smear, so I started using the China Markers. I use white and black and like I said, just use a light touch when you use 'em.

At that price it outa come with a kiss!

Try the Dick Blick Art Supply catalog, shipping use to be reasonable!

I've seen guys use chalk, but I don't like wax with my stripes!

I put my stabilos' in the freezer, honestly, it works.

Helps when sharpening them too. They tend to fall apart, but right out of the freezer they are good.

  18. I had a couple of the water-soluble pencils used for marking cloth but they seemed to be too hard to mark on painted surfaces. If you can't find an art supply store close by see if there is a Staples store in your area.If so ask them to order some Staedtler Omnichrome pencils. They are as good or better than Stabilo pencils and most Staples stores carry Staedtler products.

I usually store my Stabilo pencils in a metal pencil box inside my paint kit as fumes from the reducers and cleaners will deteriorate them in short order.

If you still can't find them;shoot me a PM with your address and I'll send you a couple.

Be careful of white stabilo on black Paint. It can sometimes leave a stain in the black paint. I use a White Staedtler Omnichrome Pencil for dark surfaces.

That's what you get for living in the sticks. I got china markers from the Ben Franklin store here. In the "notions" section.

I've used Prismacolor silver pencils for striping boundry lines(not for grids). They work well, but are about the same price as Stabilos.
Welding friends seem to have them...

I searched all over "town" today and no one had them...so I called ace hardware and they said they have china markers, so I'm getting a few today and will see how they work out. I hate having the closest real store being 20 minutes away.

I bought 3 boxes of 12 count stabilio, yellow black white, from Dick Blick Art about 2 years ago and I still have a lot left. I would guess once you get one you love it and buying a 12count box will DEFINITELY be worth your money. I use mine on every job and I would STRONGLY caution against using imitators.

  28. If all you want is a grid, make a simple pounce pattern and you will never need a stabilo again.

I used a water sol fabric pencil a couple of times when learning. They tought me a crappy lesson, they are hard and will scratch paint (good thing I used it on my stuff).
TFCP global has stabillos pretty reasonable and shipping isn't a ripoff.
I can honestly say I use my stabilllos on 99% of the work I do in one way or another. even if you have to pay high shipping they are worth it.
Keep them cool and use a light hand...
