The thing about unfinished cars is the fact that in the old days finished was hard to define. Most truely old hot rodders were not attempting to look dirty or unfinished, they just had one vehicle and wanted to make it there own. They would have popped for the custom paint and likely did when the money came around. They would have used chrome or otherwise had they access to it or money for it. The difference is they used there cars during the process. Crap I remember driving a primered car in highschool with full expectations that I would be one step closer to actual paint when the time came. Of course what did i know. Now they offer multiple shades of Flat paint for the entire car. Don't get me wrong, I think a car looks good in Royal blue satin finish. So do it the way you like, and realize a true hot rod is never truely finished.

unfineshed cars have always been a norm no matter what ten. My town is full of primer gray minitrucks and ricers. They just don't have enough money to finish them. Sure my 53 will have pain someday but for now it's primer.

So you are saying the ricers and mintruckers are the neo hot rodders of the day?

Are old guys making old cars look old Skool when they have the money for paint and what not to "finish" them, really rodders anymore:confused:

Only thing I "hate" is all the people trying to GUESS when it's officially over. They will NEVER be gone just like original '50's hot rods were not GONE in the '70's- you had to look for them- but they were out there.
Show Rods, Pastel Rods, Resto Rods, Billet Rods, Retro Rods- ALL still exist, Rat Rods will not go away along with any of those. People worried about the NEXT style because this one is dead REALLY need to find what it is that turns their cranks and stick with it. I still like the cars I liked in 1973 (I was 6 years old) and they would still be just as much in style today as they were (or weren't) then. The MAINSTREAM styles have changed many times over since then, but the traditional rods & kustoms that were built decades before me still get me the most excited and I cannot believe that now over 30 years later they are again the MAINSTREAM. I can pick out some of the stuff I don't like today such as billet junk on traditional customs or radials on hot rods, BUT with EVERYTHING in TRJ, Hop Up, Rod & Custom, Kustoms Illustrated sticking with the purely traditional I'm not worried about "WHAT'S NEXT?" because my own rods and kustoms will always make ME happy and that's all that really matters.

Many years ago if you were walking around with a smile on your face and had a nice greeting for everyone you met you were considered a gay person.

Timers change, labels change, it really doesn't matter.

    Why wait?

I guess it depends on your definition of "ratrod". To me it is a vehicle that is comprised of shoddy craftsmanship and bad ideas. To others it is the look or style, but to me it means a POS made to look like a hot rod.

Im 22 and I was brought up with muscle/drag cars and then just kept on loving cars, but also started going back in years. I am probably considered a newbie to stuff, but thats what I like, meeting new people that have been around and being able to pickup on things and learning new things. Overall, I just like nicely done cars. I feel with anything, trends seem to come and go and (to a certain point) it is good for a hobby like ours because it may have brought a few new people to the "scene" who actually stay because they stumbled upon something they indeed like and are in it for the love, while it also weeds out those who are just in it for the clothes.... PS: I still frequent the macarena

If any of you dirtbags know what Merry Go Round is, you all get a special award for being ratroderiffic(TM) and New Wave Studmonkeys.
And don't Google it either, bitches.

  18. i think the long in the short of it is that there is good and bad in everthing... there is alot of bad that can be said from the current trend but alot of good as well.. Frankly we've seen some cool inovation in some of these cars. And alot of old tin has been rescued, even if their current state is a little less than ideal.

I think the "scene" which is floating around right now will fade someday soon. Frankly very few of the folks that think they're into vintage cars have the skills to support the hobby.. I don't think half these kids have the skills or commitment to build anything.. It's alot easier to bolt a bumper on a honda... :)

I will actually be very glad when it is gone. the informal meets and runs that were refreshing compared to the poodle skirt streetrod evens have now become formal "shows".. I hate all the things about these shows that i hated about the streetrod events.... Plus i'd love for the prices to come down on the parts!!

  19. Did you ever notice how no matter what it is, the people who love to hate on what's "popular" and go out and do something "different" eventually all end up doing the same thing, which becomes a craze, and therefore "popular"?

It must make some of these folks want to kill themselves when they realize what happened. (suppose that then makes them Emo, when that dawns on them, their head explodes?)

I'll probably still be driving a ratty car years from now - only because that's all you find cheap in the east. I'd rather make sure it's going to start, stop, and not fall apart, than spend money making it pretty and shiny. But somehow I think that's different from what people tend to think of as a "rat rod" .... label it what you want, though, labels I could give a damn about, I just want a car I like that I can go out and enjoy.

I could dig some of those asian chicks myself. Reminds me of my high school buddy though, he always wanted to do one before he got married, wanted to see if ... how should I put this.. if there was a slant to other things? think perverted, you can figure it out..

Merry Go Round is where my brother used to buy his MC Hammer pants.

Ding ding ding, I guess, but it really is post MC Hammer, more like the era twixt Devo and The Thompson Twins. Your brother didn't buy his pants there, it must have been The Magic Mall.

BTW, The Thompson Twins are by far the worst band I've ever seen.

  24. Wasn't that the clothing store in the '80s that sold parachute pants?

Fuck Mike, you are the coolest, no doubt about it. When you were Chess Kinging it I was having to Rustler it with clothing from K-Mart.

I'll never forgive my mama for that.

Yup, I had a pair that were beige and had a full length zipper up the leg, when you unzipped 'em they were bright red inside. On white people the affect was startling, as if you had slashed with a machete, didn't work so well on my dark skin.

    The pants got me laid......NOT!
