    Wait, Hot Topic isn't cool?

This all reminds me of HOW OLD you feel when in line at a store behind some PSUDEO-PUNKS wearing the punk uniform with their tactfully torn sleeveless jean jacket with patches pinned to it of bands you saw in the EIGHTIES- a decade before these kids were born!
You have to just be quiet and keep LOOKING OLD!!!

  5. Maybe in So-Cal the punks wore sleeveless jean jackets but over here they wore old suit jackets - think Elvis Costello circa Oliver's Army rather than Guns n Roses.

...i wonder if they actually listen to the old punk bands or if they are just wearing the shirts & patches for fashion ?

why does everything always have to be scrutinized, ripped apart, inspected, labled , waterdown so it is avaliable for all, then feed to the general public by I.V. so that it can BE ACCEPTED BY ALL,,then ,only to be passed on to for the next LATEST craze???

i have never been able to grasp the fact that people always have the NEED to label everything????

    i think its fuckin stupid...

I think i bought a cheesetastic tailless suit from that place for Crystal Ball my Junior Year (1991)

Definitely a sad moment in my life.

  9. I despise the days of the Rat Rod now.

On the other hand, traditional hot rods are cool to me now, and will be cool to me years from now

...and don't go trying to say your Rat Rod is a "Traditional Hot Rod" just to fit in... :D

Ya but just think how bad the guy who is STILL wearing the punk outfit from 1982 looks, if it was all ratty and torn up back then how would it look now?

You know what I find amazing is the fact that people at work still come up to me and try telling me about some showthey watched on cable. Explaining how the Burbank Choppers build cars out of used discarded parts....blah blah blah......
There are still people out who have never been exposed to the "rat rod" scene and are intrigued with the idea of lo-buck hot rods.

Ratrods, vans, minitrucks, corvettes with angel hair........I love them all. As much as I may hate the style, build quality, or total lack thereof.......Every modified car on the road means one more customer to keep a parts store open. One more cool uncle who lights an autmotive fire under a 5 year old kid. One more voter who will say no to government intrusion into hot rodding. And most importantly, one more magnet for the cop's attention other than me!

We're all in it together. Whether or not we wanna be. As mentioned before, revel in the fact we've been made cool even if your version of cool means exactly the opposite.

PS- my 5 year old dreams were full of primered cobras, primered chargers, and primered hot rods. As long as there's broke-ass home builders that once clutched a hot wheels, there will be rat rods. Someday I'll probably own a primered cobra that makes cobra guys cringe :) And will pimp it proudly!

    History repeats itself.

I guess I can relate to this in both ways. Fashion - in the 70's hipsters and bell bottoms were worn. In the late 90's they came back. In the 80's people went to straight leg pants. Guess what, they're coming back now (unfortunately - like there aren't enough big girls trying to squeeze into little clothes - I should know - I have a few friends like that).

Anyway, not like you guys care about any of that. But, you get my point.

The ol school tradition of roddin' is back and it's GREAT! Enjoy it while it's here! Teach some of these techies about cars. I'm so sick of talking to people (guys particularly irk me) that don't know anything about cars (gimme a break - how hard is it to change a tire/oil/breaks/etc...?).

I get frustrated with my "papa" (dad) sometimes because he doesn't even know how to turn a computer on, but when it come to building a car/motor/etc... he's a wealth of knowledge. I admire him for that. :)

There was a point to my tangential rambling. For one, it seems to me that quite a few of us here are from a certain era, and eras being what they are get labeled. Labels are the problem, not the endeavour.
I can't relate to the "just like the '50s" mentality but I dare say that neither can the ones who were there. Example, if someone can come up with a picture of a continental kit with a mural of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis coexisting from 1956 I'll eat my hat.

The thing is is that lines are blurred, but the fact remains is that what was cool remains cool. Chuck Taylors will always be cool, Z Cavariccis, no.

A Hellings and Stellings air cleaner, cool for eternity, a mailbox air cleaner, never.

See that's the way it is, it is in the eye of the beholder, but some of those eyes done gone blurry with cataracts, actual or euphamastic.

No, OMD was worse...I had to sit through them when they opened for the Thompson Twins (who sucked) and again about six months later with the Power Station (who sucked with out Robert). PIL and Bangles were pretty poor also, but at least the Bangles were eye candy and the Hoodoo Gurus opened for them and were pretty decent of a band.

Chess King was better BTW. Ask Buzzard, that is probably where he got is "rockabilly" sleeveless t-shirt. Ya know, the shirt they also had the "new wave" version of in neon colors with neon light type graphics.

  23. forget the clothes and the cars. What about the tattoos? Thirty years from now they're gonna wake up, look in the mirror and wonder why they look like copies of bad oriental rugs.

I teach and test this all the time at the school...most of the kids fail.

Clash and Ramones shirts were hot for a bit and kids could not name a single song...fashion monkeys all the way.

Sex Pistols are kinda big right now...

I saw a kid the other day with a "Frankie Say's Relax" shirt...cracked me up.

Then again, all the preps in my high school wore those my senior year (86)and they had no idea about the "gay" aspect at all.

    I still chuckle.

You ain't kidding, that's why I wish I had never got the first one. It's harder to remove them than it is to get them put on.

Label me you disable me??? BTW I had two pairs of Z cavariccis in hs...The really wierd part was I listened to Metal and drove a 70 chevelle...not sure what the hell got into me

Anyway, I think the rat rod thing will always exist...shrink but continue...

  27. Chess King, Cavarrici's (that made it look like your boxers were sticking outta the zipper), and don't forget about all those overalls...one up, one down...jebus!

Why do I feel like I should be drunk to get away with reminiscing about these horrible trends?

If you want to be a rich, rich, rich man......get in on the ground floor of laser tattoo removal right now. In 20 years you will have a chain of offices with your name on the door.

  30. Of all the Fifties I can remember, I like the Fifties of the Eighties the best.

Sure, the Grafitti-style Fifties in the Seventies were pretty cool, with the Fonz and Potsie and Leather Tuscadero and whatnot, and I'll alway have nostalgia for the hardcore tattoo psychobilly Fifties of the Nineties and the early Zero-ies. But to me, nothing says authentic Fifties like those good old rockin' Doc Martens MTV Fifties of the Eighties.
