Actually no i won't hate it and i prefer the terms jalopy hotrod or souper, they wern't all shiny in the day infact most were not.The scene as we know it today was actually started here in the uk in the early 80's by a club called the low flyers. These guys used to turn up in thier jalopys sprayed matt black and rusted in rain sleet or snow using nothing but goggles and leather flying helmets and a b3 flying jacket to keep them warm. For them and for me it was back to basics fun motoring. It is the same here today as it was then i just think a lot of others did'nt understand the spirit in which it was done.I will still drive my truck to a venue park her up after a bit of fun driving and if it gets scratched or dented then so -what i just want to go fast anyway .i care not if people think my paint is not all shiney when they take a look at the mechanics and the detail they know it's well maintained and looked after but most think it's kinda cool in a used and driven kinda way.My truck is how it was back then in a drive it kinda fashion and i know i use it too much to keep the paint nice and i take the rubbish to the dump with it.So the short answer is no the uk is where it startedwell over 20 years ago and it's still very strong.....................Marq...........p.s it ain't a Ratrod it's a hotrod

Actually according to the 1941 song with Gene Krupa and Anita o'day (thanks for the boogie ride)Jalopy is suggested to be a hopped up motor car............Marq

    These lyrics?

    thanks for the boogie ride
    (r.buck, s.mitchell) 1941

    thanks for the boogie ride
    i'm more than gratified
    i'm really satisfied
    which only goes to prove
you dont know until you glide
    into the boogie ride
    how quickly you will fly
    out of this world

    i like riding in jalopies
    away from motorcycle cop-ies
i like riding just like you do
    upon the chatanooga choo choo
so let me thank you babe
thank you for the boogie ride
    it really was great

    music played by solid senders
can start me off on dancing benders
when i choo choo with my cutie
love to ride with a boogie
so let me thank you babe
thank you for the boogie ride
    it really was great

Looks like some heavy sexual inuendo to me, and she's riding his choo choo rod!

Thanks for the title though, I never heard of that one, and it's a fun one.

Didn't Anita O/Day pass away recently?

I saw Buddy Rich play once. That dude was the scariest band leader on God's green earth. Fuck up one note and the evil eye of Rich would laser a hole through your head. But boy could that wild fucker play, there were all these burnt out heavy metal fuckheads lined up front with glazed eyes getting their minds blown by that perididdling, senior citizen, Jewish, Nazi up there throwing daggers.

"Whoa bro', he can play more with one finger than I can with all my hands and legs....whoah dude, I think I'll take up ukelele!"

I watched Gene Krupa play in a resturant in Omaha in what had to be 59 or 60.A friend of the family was a drummer and after the show we sat and had dinner with him.I still have an autographed picture from that night.Man could play the drums.

You are a lucky man to have seen that, I wish.

I think Bobby Trimble from Big Sandy is a sick, sick drummer, he's a drummer's drummer. What he does looks so simple, so easy, but trust me it ain't, I love that guy both as a friend and a musician.

Danny Richmond that played with Charles Mingus is my favorite drummer of all time, he played out there, he was in the pocket yet he was NEVER in the pocket, he played somewhere beyond the tune, beyond the time signature, in and out of place. I'm getting shivers thinking about this.

No reason to hate the "ratrod" years ever... it's another avenue for the human spirit and creativity - an art form if you will. Hotrods have gone through so many phases and trends that I can't count 'em all. In retrospect, some trends were short-lived thankfully (remember pastel paints and graphics - yuk), but traditional hotrods have, and always will endure. The only thing I'll bet any of us will hate about "ratrods" are the folks that get hurt because someone built one unsafe.

Seems to me the problem with "rat rod" is.... everyone thinks its something different.
Several years ago I heard about that famous car club in Salt Lake City and saw some of the cars they built. Very creative, low cost and solid work. Their cars were referred to as "rat rods" even though they didn't like the term.
Recently read an article in the newpaper by some reporter (bet he can't change his own oil) who really hyped the coolness of "rat rods". His example: a pickup truck with old license plates cobbled together to make a floor. Yuck. I just can't see doing crummy work on purpose. Hey, I'm embarrassed about the crappy floor I built for my '65 F100 and I'm sure not going to show it off with pride. And my floor is a lot better than what this clown put in a "show truck".
Point is..when someone says "rat rod" no one else is certain what is meant.

    Precisely

  14. I keep thinking my red plaid double knit bell bottoms with the wide white belt and white shoe are going to be the next hot fad. having lived thru the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's there is much that is going to shock me.

in the 70's I was pissed when they referred to my glass T-bucket as a "FAD CAR" and my biker buddies had cool "rat bikes" the word "Rat Rod" doesn't bother me a bit. I don't feel threatened by it. quite frankly I don't understand why it would bother anyone. if you don't want to be associated just build a glass car paint it red a couple lawn chairs and a gold chain around your neck and your completely out of range....Jim

I would rather have a RAT ROD that I built than some hunk of shit "American Hotrod" built buy some dude and his cronies in a Flowered shirt. Not that there is anything wrong with that, if that is what you are into, pastel colors and all.

This pissing match reminds of the film, The Life Of Brian, when Brian says, "We are all individuals, except for me."

Hot rodding has been around sinc, what, the 30's give or take, it hasnt gone anywhere, Ive loved mercs and hotrods since i was in diapers. Those that are just in it to be trendy will eventually die out. Im always gonna love these old cars and the 50's style memoribilia because nothing these days have any style or class anymore. And I dont give a shit if everybody leaves the "scene" my big ass will still be in the garage working on my old ride.

Yep, in a few too short years we will all despise the "Rat Rod". We will mock the odd guy we see with one, (remember Flares (trousers) the first time round, and ABBA. Then one day (20 + years later ) we'll be watching TV and a serious Art Program will start pontificating about the wild young blades who defied tradition and bravley forged a new art form ( And BTW originals are now fetching a million plus at Fine Art Auctions ).
We will turn to our children and wives and say......
    1. what a load of @#%&, or
    2. Geez ! if only I had never sold that......or
    3. Hey Honey, remember when you wouldn't be seen dead in MY car.
    OR!!!
    4. I knew I should have built one when I had the money and the
    time.

Get it Hot, hit it Hard!

  28. I never understood what skating had to do with hot rods....................Maybe I'm just too old.
Hell, I got a Rat bike and a Rat rod........I feel OK too.

If I like it now, I still will in 20 years. I guess people are different. I guess I understand fads and all but I don't understand how tastes change so much. They may evolve but change?

Many now IMO taste is geared towards whatever is "in". That will change. I still think 70's custom vans are cool but they aren't exactly popular right now.

There are new things I like also. I still will likely think they are cool 20 years from now.

I did cut my hair though.

do you think that much old tin will be lying around in 2040? and ive heard that in 10 years or so we will all be using ethanol or some other fuel alternative instead of gasoline. lets just enjoy these cars and hope they will all be resurected instead of rotting in peoples backyards. id hate to go to a car show one day in the future and nobody be there. not even craprods.
