Will welded spider gears just break or will they cause a hard turn

  1. Depending on what's in your rearend, you may bust axles. A friend with a nothing 9 inch in a "A" roadster (maybe 2000 pounds), and a 283, broke axles with some skinny, no traction Bias tires (7.00x15s). The heavier the car, and stickier the tires, the more problems.

As a follow-up report.. When I switched to an open4:11 9",in my dragster, both rear wheels would spin,in the burnout box. Maybe it was because it was solidly bolted to the frame..?? It was always hard to turn,in the turnaround, with the welded spiders also. The open rear, was a pleasure to drive after that.:D Sparky. BTW, I still have the 5:10 r+p,for a '56 ford rear,if anyone is interested.

I think with enough time and nickle rod, I could weld the splined gears solid in each half of the carrier, and create a spool. To hell with the spiders. I prob won't get that done before the HAMB drags though.
