No way. I want the document that says "I legally own this vehicle".

I'm a member of AAA in California. I take all my titles there. The DMV is trained to stick it to you. AAA is on your side and knows a few tricks. When I took my trailer and a car registration there, I was prepared to fork out back registration fees to complete the transfer for the vehicles sitting on the property for several years. The people there just updated the sale date to reflect current fees and shazaam! I'm out the door for under a hundred bucks each. DMV would have asked for all t he fees since the Bill of Sale date. If you live in Cali or any other stick in the mud state, I'd try AAA to see what they can do, they pull out forms the DMV refuses to admit they have anymore. Like a "Statement of Facts" where you can put things like "This boat and trailer was on the property when we bought it" and "My grandfather gave me this pickup in 1980 when I was in high school and I'm just getting around to fixing it." When they say they don't want to register it because YOU can't prove the car was not stolen 3 owners ago, you can ask for the form that includes a "Hold Harmless" clause where you promise that when someone sues you over the ownership, you will not use the DMV to prove it's yours or sue the State over it. You swear to leave the State out of it. Try AAA and see what they can do before you go nuts on paperwork that will hang you out to dry with your states DMV

  4. No title from a title state, just sell to a no-title state with relatively easy registration procedures.

No title in a title state and want to try your luck? Never tell them you bought it from out of state. I always think of the line from American Graffitti here - "I lost it, uh, in a flood" ....
