Just pick this up in Feb. Got the flathead 6 freed up in about a week, not running yet. Am considering a Y-block but will likely go with a small block ford. Trying to figure out what hub I could run on this spindle. Kingpins will need redone, there's a bit of slop there. Considering boring the axle oversize for newer ford spindles or bushing new willys kingpins for ford spindles. I'm a manual machinist, so I'm trying to do some of my own work, and keep this low budget. Brad
Making some progress on my spindle/hub project. Will be working on caliper mounts soon. Using original spindles with bushing on inner, some lathe work on outer new ranger hub, spindle work not finished yet grease seal still needs to be ironed out old wheel/backing plate p***enger side trial fit 14 inch trailer tire/rim different view of inside
Nice project. I had a stock untouched 1929 96A 2 door a while back, nice looking cars. Good luck with the build. JW
Thanks JW, Was wondering if the boss on top of axle where the brake lever used to be, could be ground down flush with rest of axle and filled in with brazing rod? I don't want to compromise strength, though. I do think it looks a bit odd left there. Brad
Does anybody have any ideas about this? I'm referring to the boss on topside of the axle next to the kingpin. Would like to grind this off on each side, maintaining the contour of the axle, and if there is a small hole left, fill it with brazing rod. Brad
I cant see an issue with removing that boss, its only an extra and as you said if you follow the contour. JW
Have not been able to locate an original windshield for the car. Unsure if I will chop it but either way I want a good fit. I am unfamiliar with this era of cars, some of these features are new to me, ie, the space above the windshield frame, the holes in the body next to frame. Unsure if frame hinges on these holes or on a piano type hinge from above?
Just finished rough grinding on the bosses. A little more work with a die grinder and I think it will be ok. Then epoxy in the hole or drive a piece of br*** stock in and file it flush.
Update on my Willys project. Removed dash to evaluate space behind cowl. Found windshield frame and crank ***embly, now installed and working. Starting on new gas tank, 2 inches taller, 2 inches longer, went from 11.4 to 14.4 gallons. Rehung some sheetmetal temporarily for DMV inspector, I hope he isn't a knucklehead, doing a bonded ***le in NC can test your patience. Brad .
Received my bonded ***le in mail yesterday from North Carolina DMV. that was a bit of a shock, only 60 days turnaround time. The bond was $100.00. Here is video of engine fired up. Pulling next week, runs well for sitting so long. 300 ford six taking its place.
Got the old flathead pulled today. She is not a light one! Brought the 300 six into the shop, started stripping off unnecessary parts, and found a rebuild placard under the motor mount. Hopefully it was a quality rebuild, I'll find out soon enough. Does anyone have any experience with Aaron's automotive products of Springfield MO? That was the name on the rebuild placard.
Thanks for the compliments. This is my first build. My goal is to have fun with the car, not build something I'm afraid to get a scratch on. Got the curved roof parts tacked on last night. I have the metal trusses I got with the mini-van roof from the boneyard. Unsure if I will use them or steel tubing.
You did a fine job with getting the scrub radius decent with add-on discs. The imaginary C/L of the king pin should intersect the road "under" the tire tread footprint...and it looks super good from here. I've seen "name brand" kits that don't come close to your kit I winced when you said SBF....those are just too long for these old full hood cars. That 300 sounds interesting to me, if the length won't cause a loss of foot-room....but a sedan is more forgiving than a coupe or roadster in foot-room.
I decided on the 300 six so I could retain the entire hood with no problem. It's a long engine, however. Recessing the firewall is in this car's near future. Thanks for the kind words on my brake setup. I fabbed it using the stock spindles.
